The short answer is that you will be eligible to choose one of the stock avatars hosted by CAF once your "rank" becomes a that of New Member. Currently you are a Trial Member.
You will automatically become a New Member after a few weeks and a certain number of posts (50, maybe?)

Note: You will become eligible for a custom avatar once you become a Regular Member, which requires six months of membership and at least 500 posts.

Its not a button, but a field in which you enter your comments, just like posting a comment in the forums. Here is as screen capture of my profile. I have circled the field where you can enter comments to post on your wall.

I do not have any message field on my about me page. Is there a setting to turn it on? I cannot find it on my friends pages either. I am not usually bad with computers or interfaces so I think it might have to do with me being a trial member or something like that
Dont quite have the posting pictures thing down yet or I would show a screenshot. Actually there is a rule at the bottom saying that I am not allowed so i will describe it I just have the tab for the wall followed by showing 1 post of one

Yeah.... I think you are right. I just created a new account for testing purposes and my new account didn't have a means for posting to my profile's wall.
