Humility is knowing that your are completly dependent on God, that everything good comes from him and not yourself. That God has no need of you to accomplish his ends even tho it seems that we accomplish the good. To see ourselves as a creature powerless without him.
It goes contrary to what the world says to be...proud...me...me...me...I'm the one that did it, aren't I good.
So humility means ... humble...God...God...God...God is the one that did it, isn't He good.
Basically it is seeing ourselves and God in proper perspective...the truth.
This why the humble person prays, because they know that they need God to bring about good in them and without his help, they can do nothing. So they pray always as recognition of this.
A sinner never prays, or prays very little, because they feel the weight of accomplishment is on their shoulders and if they make up their mind, they can do anything. This is the nature of pride, seeing themselves in the role of God.
One who is humble would shy away from saying, "I've beat this sin", because they know they can do nothing. So they always stay in the role of dependency on God, and know the day or the moment they think they can say "no" to sin, is the day sin conquers them no matter how holy the person might be. The virtuous know "I need God in every battle forever".
David and Goliath is an example, where David being a boy relied on God to win the battle.
"O blood and water, gushing forth from the heart of Jesus as a font of mercy for us, we TRUST
in you."
The other side of the humble coin is in regard to our neighbor and seeing that person as God sees them in relation to ourselves. Not putting ourselves above others but rather as servants to them. "By this all men will know that you are mine, if you have love for one another."
The parable of the Good Smaritan is an example. To see that everyone is good in the eyes of God and to treat them as such. This means we see ourselves in the proper perspective and not let our egos run away with ourselves.
Just a few thoughts.
