As others have said, edible gold leaf is not particularly expensive and the quantities used are tiny. Fresh strawberries out of season probably cost a lot more than a bit of gold leaf.

Years ago I bougth about twenty pounds of out of season fresh strawberries as an investment and put them in a safety deposit box, they were really expensive and I thought that the price would keep going up. A few months later I got a call from the bank complaining about the smell coming from my safetry deposit box.

Indeed. The amount of gold leaf used in the gift is smaller than the amount of gold leaf applied to a typical Buddha statue in certain Buddhist temples in some parts of the Far East.

I do question why there is a Vatican state? What purpose can it serve in the current world? I would not object to the Catholic Church declaring tomorrow that it has given up its worldly attachment to the papal states and treasures. But I am realistic that a community of people who have amassed such wealth invest much of their identity in its maintenance, and will rationalize its preservation until forced by circumstance to change their rationalizations.
So, the most important question to me, is "how is this wealth and influence used to affect good in the world?" Whether the Pope receives a giant chocolate candy with gold on it doesn't seem to mean much in the broader scheme of things.
|
The Vatican is preserving the art treasures there for the enjoyment of the people, not rationalizing their possession. There was another thread on this . . .the Pope could sell all the treasures tomorrow to relieve some people's poverty, then they would be in some collector's mansion, where no one could see them, and the poor we would still have with us.
I can relate to this in a small way: my mother-in-law gave me some (ugly, ostentatious) earrings as a gift, and said she hoped I would wear them to her church when we went. So I did . .. the pastor gave a sermon that included comments on the vanity of people who wear ostentatious jewelry to show off, looking straight at me. It would have been funny if it hadn't been so embarrassing.

Because the issue so far has been berried, and currently the situation is fruitless.
