Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
My usual lifting workout was this. I also did 15 minutes of cardio after each workout.
Day 1: Chest and Back
Day 2: Biceps and Triceps
Day 3: Shoulders and Abs
Day 4: Legs
Day 5: Rest
REPEAT
I'm training for a 4 mile race on October 7, so last week I switced my workout to this:
Day 1: Lift - Upper Body + 15 minutes of cardio
Day 2: Run
Day 3: Lift - Lower Body + 15 minutes of cardio
Day 4: Run
REPEAT
When it gets to about a week before the race, I'll do nothing but run. Then I'll go back to some sort of lifting routine again.

Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
I had mentioned once before that these threads really helped keep me motivated, like having someone to answer to. Well, it turns out that this is more true than I realized. My workouts tapered off a bit for the past three weeks. Part of the reason, though, is that over Labor Day weekend, I had the biggest sound job of the year. I was hired to do the sound for the nations largest Catholic Charismatic Conference in Anaheim California.
I provided the sound for the 9,000 seat arena, as well as 3 other 1,000 seat ballrooms. Although I didn't have any formal workout that weekend, I got a lot of excercise.
Well, friends, it's great to be back. Thanks for starting this thread, again, Sharon.

Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
I did keep up with my walking while the CAF shop was closed for repairs. I plan to get back into running when my BF and I come home from our 2 week Canada/New England vacation. We leave Thursday. We plan to do a LOT of hiking (Acadia NP). I am anxious to start running again. I barely got started when the weather got NASTY hot and I figured since I wasn't in shape running wise it would be better to wait 'til the weather was cooler again. Well, the cool weather is here for the most part, so there is no excuse. For you runners, Michael & Sharon, can I ask, and please be honest, should I have kept up running or was it better to stop? I know.....too late now, but I wasn't sure at the time.
Thanks,
Kathy

Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
I don't exercise as much as I did in college, but, atleast I do walk about a quarter-mile (I've timed it) from my workplace door to my seat on the 3rd floor of the building -- includes stair climbing. So, that's atleast a half-mile a day, and 1 mile if I decide to get a lunchtime salad. The lunchroom is 1/4 of a mile in the opposite direction. I'm still a thin 125lbs, though.

Where I live, the summertime highs get well over 100. When it does, I don't stop running, I just run earlier in the morning, so I can beat the heat. On days that I can't get up early enough, I run on the treadmill. Yes, there are days when my schedule doesn't allow for running, but I don't use the heat as an excuse not to run.
I ran 2 miles today. That's 4 days in a row now.

Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
Yesterday afternoon, I drove over 140 miles to Santa Barbara. I'll be here the rest of the week, unless I finish the job early. The hotel is in a beautiful historic neighborhood, so I got up early and went running. It was awesome to see all the old homes, so beautifully maintained. Quite delightful, really.

Well, I am getting back into the swing of things. Broke 10 miles walking yesterday! First time in a while too. I like the cooler weather. Here's looking to a great fall.

Kathy, that's awesome. 10 miles is a long way in one day! Good job.
I ran 2 miles after work yesterday, and then another 2 miles this morning. Kathy, are you and I the only ones excercising?

hi kathy! i would have replied sooner, but this site must be having some techie difficulties, because i pressed reply...and it vanished...
i have not been running for the past 3 weeks... in a slump, i guess...really, no excuse...just laziness...but, when i run, i think it's best to run when it's cooler, but i have run in extreme temps. here's the thing, and a runner friend of mine told me this moons ago...and i never forgot it. YOU DON'T NEED TO RUN A MARATHON TO BE A RUNNER. There, I said it! LOL Just run 15 minutes, if that's what you can do, and be done with it. And start inching up by 5 minutes, every few weeks...and pretty soon, you will have increased your speed, stamina, and endurance. I truly always carry that little saying with me, and now, having been off of it for 3 weeks, I will probably do the treadmill for a while, before running hills in my neighborhood, again. And don't worry about mixing walking in with it...all runners start somewhere. And, I'm not marathon runner, but I worked hard at inching my way up...bit by bit...weekly. The sad thing is, when you miss a few weeks in a row like this, then you really mess up all that inching up progress!!!
So...start slow, and keep at it...that's the best advice I can think of...and pray. Pray that God keeps you focused, and taking care of that great body He blessed you with. It's the only one we have, so let's use it wisely.
God bless!!!

Re: Exercise Support Group--yes We're Back!
If you really want to become a good solid runner...for fitness, racing, losing weight... or whatever...my advice would be to get a treadmill, and buy a running video, preferably with a coach who was a marathon runner...i use runervals, and these tapes have helped me immensely in increasing my time, and distance...

I want to get back into running again. I had gotten myself to just over a mile.I know, big deal you say. But for a 52 y/o overweight, ex smoker & meat eater grandma who's only running was after the ice cream truck as a kid, THAT was a huge accomplishment. And I felt so darn good. SO I walk everywhere and when I get back from vacation, I plan to do the "cemetary circuit" (nice gentle hills, cool and quiet). Wish me luck
Kathy
