Default Mary on the Cross

My mother-in-law, who is very anti-catholic, stated that while she was doing missionary work in Quito, Ecuador she saw an image in the largest Catholic church there of Mary on the cross. Has anyone ever heard of this or any other similar images? It seems a little disturbing. Christ should be the only one on the cross, He is our sole redeemer. Yes Mary is to be venerated and her intercession sought, but she is not to be worshipped as Christ. This would be a clear violation of Catholic teaching.

It's not Mary on the Cross. It's a woman martyr who was actually crucified (by her own father), and who is commemorated for her martyrdom. If I could find that out in a few minutes on the internet, I wonder why your mother-in-law couldn't?

Here are some links that talks about it briefly:

This image is not of Mary - it is in fact of an unofficial (not formally canonised) saint, known in South America as Santa Liberada. She is a princess of Portugal who was martyred by being crucified, and is thus shown traditionally on a cross.

No more problematic than depictions of St Peter on his upside down cross or St Andrew on his traditionally X-shaped one.

Some more information about herhere

Wow! We get this exact same charge in these forums about every four months. Every Protestant missionary in the world must have gone to this one, small church in Equador!

Is this place a required visit for anti-Catholic prosyletizers?

Thanks for all of the info. I knew that this couldn't be Mary, but I just wasn't able to find the necessary information to substantiate it. Thank you for all of your help.

Through Christ's peace,
Kevin

I have heard this from some of my Protestant friends as well...they all seem to have known somebody who knew somebody that went to Equador and saw it...too funny!

At this point, I have heard this story so much that I don't think there are any actual catholics in this church. There can't be any where for them to sit because of all the protestant missionaries there .

Interesting. I never knew there was such an (unofficial) saint. One question this forum brings to mind though is do you think the protestants are doing more converting in South America than catholics anymore? I mean it seems that besides Pastors, many teenagers, and old ladies are sent to do missionary work for their churches... They might even be converting catholics to whatever they believe.

Are you sure it's every 4 months:

February 2006: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?p=1288526

January 2005: http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=32410

That second one even has a photo, posted by someone who never got round to making a second post. Oh well.

In there studiously avoiding any plaques, handouts or other information describing who that woman on the cross actually is, I might add.

The 2nd link IS of Mary. It's images like that that needs to be known to all Catholics so we're not stumped when a non-Catholic Christian asks us about it but they need to be willing to listen.

A better question might be why this sort of allegation resonates among non-Catholics.
