Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
Yes, but i'm sad that only 19,000 Poles will go there. It's a pity that the frequency is so low...

My son is going. Along with about 20 others from our CYO. Should be something to remember for a lifetime.

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
My mom and I are going along with two of her brothers and their wives. It'll be my first trip outside of the country (except for Canada). Mom and I are getting kinda nervous because the guy organizing the trip is not very forthcoming with details such as when we'll get to take a shower (or if we'll get one at all )...
I think God must have some plan in store for us because my Mom has been very reluctant to go but it was too late after she paid the money...it seems God wants us there. We'll see, won't we.

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
Four of my sons, Lord willing, will attend. One still has to see if he can get leave. Three will work as volunteers and will get their room and board paid for during it. My Marine son has signed up to help with security.
The other son will attend with a German Catholic scouting group. It will be a little cheaper since the scouts there know how to do without and how to rough it. He can renew old acquaintances, too.
Hopefully, they will be able to attend some of the Juventutem Masses and prayers.
The Fraternity of St. Peter has a couple of priests in Koeln. We were at Fr. Banauch's ordination. He is a very holy priest.
If you go to Koeln to the Cathedral and to other churches, it will certainly be a pilgrimage. Pray the Rosary on the way there, go to Confession, pray the rosary there and for the Holy Father's intentions and pray for graces or requests for others and then pray the Rasary again on the way home.
The relics of the Three Kings are in the Cathedral which was built to house them. The whole church is a giant reliquary. They are behind the main altar.
St. Albert the Great is there in a church not too far from the Cathedral.
Take Joan Carroll Cruz's book, Relics. Most tourist guides do not cover religious sites from the spiritual side.
The Archdiocese of Koeln has a website with lots of great info about traditons, customs, foods, recipes, etc. that are associated with feast days.
Be warned though, you'll need to practice custody of the eyes a lot. Stay away from newstands where porn is openly displayed. Unfortunately, the 3 meter placards and billboards are strategically placed to be unavoidably viewed throughout the city.
The weather can be dry and sunny in August, but then again Koeln gets a lot of rain, since it is close to the Netherlands. Take a poncho and a sweatshirt. If it does rain, it can be cool.
It has the same type of climate as western Oregon and western Washington.
There are no water fountains, but bottled water can be bought. Try McDonald's for free bathrooms, otherwise one has to pay a little to use them elsewhere.

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
I got accepted as a volunteer for WYD 2005. I start on August 7th and wrap it up on the 22nd.
Travelling costs will be about $1000 Cdn in total, and that's if I don't respond to the spiritual & cultural undertow and make for Rome after the final day.
The only loose end is my fiance. She applied too but hasn't heard any news, positive or negative.

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
My parish, and a neighboring parish, are teaming up to send youth to WYD. Originally, two of my children (ages 18 & 20) were planning to go, but my wife and I became uncomfortable with them being so far away from home, and us. So we decided to join them. The tour package includes Italy and Germany. I'm German, but I've never been to Germany, although I've always wanted to go. My wife is Italian, and has always wanted tosee Italy, but hasn't. This a perfect opportunity for us to go and fulfil a lifelong dream.
We've been fundraising for 2 years, but most of the funds had to come from us. It will be well worth the expense. We're really looking forward to it.

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
Hey fellow WYD Pilgrims,
My name is Rachel, and I just wanted to say that I'll be going to WYD with a group of people from my Newman Center. We're starting in Italy, then going to Germany, flying to Poland, and back to Germany. Some of the stops for the pilgrimage will be JPII's tomb, Assisi, Krakow, Auschwiez, JPII's childhood apt. and a tour of where he grew up, the convent of Sr.Faustina, a tour around the town where Pope Benedict grew up and then ending w/WYD, if any of you have ever been to Poland or Germany before and know of great Catholic places, please let me know!
In Christ,
Rachel

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
My son, now 17, came home from WYD in Toronto saying, "I'm going to Germany in 2005!" Here it is 2005 and he is indeed going! He's going by way of London, which is a bit worrisome at this point. He's spending a night in London on the way to Cologne and a night on the way back. ---KCT

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
Haven't been to the forums in months and months...probably because we've been so busy getting ready for World Youth Day ...actually,
for this trip I am part of the Archdiocesan "staff"..
my parish group will be chaperoned by two other
adults (one is actually a young adult who graduated
from Franciscan University last year...you know
you've been doing youth ministry too long when
one of your youth is now old enough to chaperone ).
Our pastor is going, and one of our auxiliary bishops
is traveling with the group.
We leave on August 9, going to Rome, Assisi, Padua,
and Florence in Italy; Dachau and Oberammegau in
Germany. Staying in Konigswinter outside of Cologne
and will "commute" in for WYD activites.
This Sunday, our parish is hosting the Archdiocesan
group for Mass with Rite of Blessing of Pilgrims and
a luncheon afterwards. We are all very excited to
go (this is our parish's third WYD Pilgrimage, Rome in
2000 and Toronto in 2002). Wonder where the next
one will be?
Look for white tshirts, with red and blue design of the
Washington DC "skyline" (Mnuments, National Shrine,
US Capitol) at the opening ceremony and vigil...
110 and of us!
God bless, safe travels and see you in Cologne

Re: Anyone going, or sending youth to WYD 2005?
My group is leaving in a mere 2.5 weeks!!!!
We'll fly out of JFK to London
Then from London to Poland.
We're staying at St. Faustina's convent
I'm on cloud nine!
We'll get to visit John Paul's home and neighborhood, and we're also going to Auschweiz.
Then we're going to Prague, and then on to Germany
I can still hardly believe it...
It's a good thing that Papa Benedict will be in Germany; otherwise the group might have a hard time getting me out of Poland, I think
What an awesome opportunity...I've never been out of the country, so I can just hardly believe it still that I'm going to get to do this!!!
Peace, Prayers, and Blessings to all!
