Default 3 pounds on the chest

Why did my parents tap their chests 3 times during the consecration of the host and the wine? Why 3 times? Why at those 2 times?

No idea. I bless myself at those two times and say 'My Lord and My God' (not out loud of course ). I do it because the consecration is THE probably most significant moment of the Mass, (hence the bells) - where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of our Lord.

those gestures, like some of the responses, in the old latin Mass were done 3 times as a reference to the Trinity. The Eastern Rite liturgies retain many 3-fold gestures and responses and ritual actions.

Tapping the chest is also an act of penance. It goes back to the Jewish people, who would beat their chests in repentance for sins commited. That's why the tapping of the chest is common during the Confiteor and the Agnus Dei, both prayers asking God for mercy.

When I say the "mea culpa", I repeat this beautiful prayer a priest taught me when I was a teenager. One begs God to create for them a new heart while symbolically bruising their "old" one. So, I implore the Lord with my soul, "O, create for me a new heart and unite it to yours."

I was taught this from my parents -- on each strike, "thru my fault, my fault, my most grievous fault" as an act of contrition

Oh, and to add to the OP original question, did anyone learn to do this during the Hail Holy Queen? (at the "o clement, o loving, o sweet" part)
