Default Douay-Rheims Bible and Daily Missal

Hello, this is my first post.

I am interested in obtaining a copy of the Douay-Rheims Bible and a Daily Missal (the old kind with the Latin).

I have noticed an edition of each on CatholicFamilyCatalog.com which look like they are really well bound - I think they may be the Baronius Press editions because the descriptions and photos look very similar (they are the ones that cost 54.95).

I was wondering if any of you have seen or used these particular editions, and what you think of them.

Thanks in advance...
Thommie

Red face Re: Douay-Rheims Bible and Daily Missal

Hi Thommie,

First, allow me to wish you a Happy New Years.

I have just received the Douay-Rheims for Christmas published by Baronius Press and It's absolutely beautiful. The binding is white leather and the encyclicals in the beginning are a treasure to read.

I tried ordering the soft leather Douay-Rheims for study and note marking from Catholicfamilycatalogue, but they don't have it in stock so I had to get the hard cover instead. (Didn't know I was getting this one for a present )

The edition I got is the Bishop Challoner revision. I couldn't be happier. As for the daily missal, I have the Vatican II St. Paul edition from 1975, so I can't answer your question regarding that one.

Hope this helped a little,
George

Happy New Year! I use the Douay-Rheims Bible published by Loreto; I really enjoy reading this one. Also, I use the Vulgate Search on my computer (it has the D-R and a Latin version side by side for easy studying. This can be found at http://vulsearch.sourceforge.net/index.html

Thanks for your replies, George and Nutmeg.

And Happy New Year to YOU as well!

I'll be checking out that link, nutmeg. I've got to hit the sack right now - I work tonight (computers don't take days off - and poor programming fails even on holidays...).

I hope you have a wonderful day, and thanks again!

Yours because His,
Thommie

Welcome, welcome, welcome.

I bought both the Douay-Rheims (2005) and the the 1962 Roman Missal (2004 - with the Latin, just in case...) from Baronius Press and find them to be the best looking and best feeling of my many, many bibles, missals, etc. I seem to recall paying full price, which is not cheap, but Oh, my, these may last me the rest of my life.

Thanks, Tassitus.

Yes, I know the price seems a little steep, but given that the market for such items may be somewhat limited, and the fact that a well-bound Bible costs about that much anyway, I agree that they are probably well worth it...especially based on what you and George have said.

I am one step closer to placing that order.

Nutmeg, I checked out that site you mentioned. Looks like I may have some downloading to do this weekend.

Thanks to you all...
Thommie

I got my Pocket Edition Douay Rhiems from them. Unfortunately they seem to have run out.

I have the Baronius Press 1962 Roman Missal. It is beautiful. It is also very easy to use because it has the Latin on the left hand page and the English on the right hand page for the entire Ordinary of the Mass. All of the prayers for the entire year's Masses are included. It is not cheap, but it is very well made (leather binding, multicoloured ribbon markers).

I don't have a recently printed Douay-Rheims Bible. Mine actually is from 1952. It was my mother's Bible. She bought a new one a few years ago and gave me her old one.

Many thanks to all of you for your input.

I ordered the Missal from allcatholicbooks.com and it came two days ago. It was worth every penny. I spent that evening (I was at work, but it was a fairly light night) separating the pages and loosening up the binding, and I've begun exploring it.

I didn't order the Bible yet. I'm holding out for either a flexible cover or even a pocket edition. In the meantime, I've downloaded the soft copy mentioned by Netmeg.

Thanks again.
