Catholic Knitters
Are there any knitters out there that would like to chat about their favorite "obsession"? This was an idea that came up on another thread which sounded really fun!

Re: Catholic Knitters
Hi Nancy,
Here I am! Actually, though I do mostly knitting, I also do quite a bit of crochet. My latest project is a mile-a-minute afghan which will go for charity.
I also just finished a great cardigan sweater. I did it in baby sport-weight yarn, two strands. I think it turns out stronger and denser than if I had used worsted.
I'm a big experimenter, so I'm learning pretty fast, though I've only been knitting for a few years.
What sorts of things do you like to do?

Re: Catholic Knitters
Hi!
Right now I'm making socks. I'm trying to learn how to do short-row socks without leaving holes up the ankle! I think I've got it figured out. Around Christmas I made hats for my husband and daughter. I'm also working on a scarf to match my daughter's hat but its a lace pattern and I can only work on it when I can really concentrate or I end up ripping it out to fix mistakes! I always try to have something on the needles that is easy and mindless to knit as well. Good for lunch time knitting at work or for waiting rooms.

Re: Catholic Knitters
I love to knit! I was knitting when it wasn't 'kewl' (started back in 1979 IOW). I always have something going--prayer shawls (the only Lion Brand yarn I won't use is ironically the one touted for these--Homespun--which I have always found to split and so I use Red Heart instead, Clouds); topsy turvy dolls, enough scarves for a boutique, afghans, hats, toys, a nativity set (yes really!), etc. I can't stand going through a day without knitting a few rows (great for getting in prayer time too)!

Re: Catholic Knitters
Brother Hrolf now presents a male perspective. DW spins her own wool. She crochets. She tats lace. She weaves. She knits. She has raised angora rabbits in the south Louisiana heat, freezing water in two liter Dr. Pepper bottles to place in their cages during the summer. Angora seaters don't sell in south Louisiana.........no matter how magnificent they look.
As I write there are not one, but TWO spinning wheels in the living room. She can spin whatever fiber you want without looking at the wheel as she watches TV. She can knit the same way - by feel. The loom, however, takes too much set up and concentration.
She wove, dyed and knitted me a vest sweater dyed in cochineal - cochineal being derived from the carcases of certain Central American beetles. It was an amazing color of red. I wore it for a year and then she took it back to knit sweaters for our sons...........twenty years later the yarn still sits in cane baskets in closets.........as well as the fleeces she bought.
Did I tell you we raised sheep here too? South Louisiana........ Lamb and mutton is competely unkown to us because of the heat. DW, like Emeril, kicked it up a notch. And no, four rams do not keep 2 acres of yard cut w/o mowing. And then there are all these bags of wool and cotton waiting to be spun into yarn and knitted. She was a member of a local knitting club. One of the members passed away and all of her unused supplies were passed out to the club members. So we have a closet full of unused yarns and fibers.......and this was 15 years ago.
And, after 25 years of this, I don't have a single garment to show for it.

Aah, I come from a family of crocheters meself. Nothing major - a few easy bunny rugs and shawls and such, all on BIG hooks And a half-finished (three years ago) cardigan that ended up a bit too big and needs unpicking and redoing. It may be finally finished this winter

Re: Catholic Knitters
I can't knit for the life of me - maybe it's because I'm left-handed...

I'll ask. They're not getting used. And unlikely to be used. We haven't had a really cold winter down here since the early 90s. I fear there really is something to global warming.

Our temps are expected to be below 0 for the next 5 days. Send your knitting supplies to Iowa! It's miserably cold here right now.
