Default Are any Catholic groups giving Bibles, rosaries, etc. to soldiers?

I received something in the mail from Campus Crusade for Christ. They are giving Bibles and tracts to soldiers going to Iraq. I am not contributing to their organization, but I was wondering if any Catholic organizations are doing anything for the soldiers. Does anybody know of a Catholic organization that gives Bibles, rosaries, etc. to the soldiers who are going to Iraq?

Cool Re: Are any Catholic groups giving Bibles, rosaries, etc. to soldiers?

The Knights of Columbus provide prayer books and rosaries.

(A pdf of the booklet is also available on their website)

Do they accept donations from the general public, or are they strictly supported by their members?

Surely they welcome (and often solicit) donations from the public. I expect it would be preferable to direct a donation through a local council (or better: Fourth Degree Assembly (who are more involved with patriotic support)) rather than sending something to the national organization.

You can find assemblies and councils in your area through the national website Find a Council.

I was wondering that too. I've been sending books thru a group called Operation Paperback* and when they send soldiers' requests they always add "Middle East restrictions" meaning no porn and no religious [non-Muslim] material.

*I highly recommend it if you have extra books around the house needing a home.

Rosary Army will indeed send a free rosry to anyone who asks.
Quite a number of people there are involved in making rosaries that meet military standards. (Colors, no metal, etc).
If you come on over, you can learn to make rosaries yourself, & send them to the good people who are making sure that they get to the men & women in our military....
Two addresses that can tell you more about how to help with this are:
Rosaries for Soldiers
c/o Clo Lillig
10806 West Lakeshore DR
Carmel, Indiana 46033
(You can email Clo Lillig at [email protected] )

Catholics In The Military
P.O.Box 1757
Front Royal, VA 22630

You can also make a monetarty donation, of course.....But making the rosaries yourself--whether for soldiers, or for other folks, is so rewarding that I have to tell you, I cannot imagine what a difference it has made in my own life.
I am NOT a representative of Rosary Army, but I am very happy to be one of the people who volunteers to make rosaries for them. They are good people, with a wondeful apostolate of prayer, & I would love to see more people join the effort to share the rosary with others.
HTH!!

Do they have instructions available to tell how to make the rosaries?

Thumbs up Re: Are any Catholic groups giving Bibles, rosaries, etc. to soldiers?

Yes, they have a very nice flyer that shows the step by step making of a rosary, along with very clear instructions.
If you would like something a little more hi-tech, there is a DVD you can purchase ($19.95 + shipping costs) which I am told, is excellent.
I started out by requesting a free rosary, & it came with the flyer, & some scrap twine. Despite "just knowing" that I could not make a rosary, I started trying the knots in the twine.
That was a couple hundred rosaries ago.....
Try it! It is one of the most satisfying & easy-to-do crafts that I have ever found. Soon, you will be knotting like a pro.....

(After a few months at rosary making, I woke up in bed one night, with my own RA rosary in my hands, tangled beyond belief....I turned on the light to discover that I had tied the entire rosary into a Hail Mary knot!! That was when I realized that I was a real rosary maker!!)

That's wonderful, and funny too. I am going to contact them to see about making them myself. Do I need any special tools? There is a Joann Fabrics store near where I live, if needles, etc. are needed.

Really, all you need are your 2 hands, & some twine. The addresses for suppliers are over there, too, one company who makes the twine, & a couple of members who hand-dye special colors, & sell it online.
Some people there have come up with ideaas for tools to make things easier for themselves.
You will need a candle or a lighter to heat seal the twine ends so they don't unravel, & some kind of tape to wrap the ends before they are heat sealed. (Twine unravels unless heat sealed, tape keeps it together until you can get it sealed after you're done.

The first couple of rosaries you make seem very complicated, but don't give up! You have to make a few, before your hands catch up with your brain telling them what to do....Then, one day, you realize that you are making the knots without even thinking about it.

God bless you & I hope you enjoy this wonderful opportunity.

Anyone who is interested in making rosaries should get in touch with their local Legion of Mary.

http://www.legionofmary.org/lom.html

My wife is a member of our Parish Legion and one of the things they do is make rosaries to give to nursing home residents.
She's made 100's of them over the last year or so .
I've even made a couple
It's not hard once you get the hang of it. She can make a rosary in about 20 minutes. It took me about an hour the first time.

Thanks, Zooey! I have candles (enjoy burning them--in fact a former co-worker of mine gave me a blessed candle from a Shrine), and I have lighters too (unfortunately, I do smoke). I will email the Rosary people. I would like to try this because it will mean a lot more to me to actually make a Rosary rather than just donate money towards one. Thank you again.

My parents make and send rosaries to the the solidiers. The aren't a part of an organization. There are some requirements to what color the rosaries have to be and they are all made of twine.

I contacted the organization that Zooey makes rosaries for. They are sending me a rosary and instructions on how to make them. They are the twine ones that soldiers are allowed to have. God bless you and your parents for helping the soldiers with the rosaries.
