Crazy Internet Junkies #62 - New Orleans
Bienvenue a Nouvelle Orleans! Welcome to New Orleans. New Orleans' patron saint is Our Lady of Prompt Succor:
http://www.holyspiritinteractive.net...omptsuccor.asp
She is also Louisiana's patron saint as we ask for her prayers durring every hurricane season.
Sorry, I'm late on this folks. I fell asleep at the computer sometime around 8:30 last night and woke up at 2 with a crick in my neck.
Good morning, everyone!

Coffee and beignets are served! Watch the powdered sugar - particularly if you are wearing navy or black!

Re: Crazy Internet Junkies #62 - New Orleans
Some thoughts on New Orleans:
The image that most people have of New Orleans does not reflect the reality. The wild goings-on on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras do indeed happen. They are, however, a recent invention (last twenty to thirty years) and the toursists are the ones doing it. A far different Mardi Gras will be found away from the French Quarter - the Mardi Gras that I know - families with little kids perched safely in seats on top of ladders so that they can see the parades.
New Orleans is a very Catholic city. I don't know what the current stats are but when I was growing up it was 75%. It is not at all unusual even today when taking public transportation to see people making the sign of the cross when passing a church. And, at least the downtown and French Quarter churches remain open during the day to make it easy to make a quick visit to the Blessed Sacrament. When I was a child, all restaurants, movie theatres, bowling alleys, etc. closed on Good Friday.
The destruction of Katrina and Rita brought tears to my eyes. I spent the first six years of my life in that part of New Orleans known as Lakeview. I went to primer (which was not kindergarten) at St. Anthony's and we went to Mass at St. Dominic's. St. Dominic's had 13 ft. of water and St. Anthony's had 2 ft - but only because it was elevated.
St. Dominic's is on the left. This photo was taken after the waters had receeded. See the white statue in the middle? That's the Blessed Mother and no she is not on church grounds. She is on public property and has a wonderful garden planted at her feet. DW and I went by here on Wednesday when we were down in NO. The bronze doors of St. Dominic took a beating from the waters but they have worked dilligently and they look great. (The church on the right is Episcopalian and they've almost got their church repaired as well).
So, as far as we could see Wednesday, Lakeview is well on its way to recovery. But this is an upper middle class to wealthy section of town. The Lower Ninth Ward and St. Bernard are not fairing anywhere near as well.

I think that was the strong cajun coffee got to you. Good stuff, but hearty.

I'll have to see if I can scan some of my NO pictures. NO before Katrina was awesome. Now, I know it would break your heart to see all that beauty in such ruins.
