Question Sex after menopause

What is the church's teaching on sex after menopause. My friend thinks that because she can no longer concieve children, because she has gone through menopause, that having sex with her husband would be a sin. Where can I find "in writing" the true teaching of the church on this subject?

The Church, from what I remember says that sex after menopause is not bad. The reason is that the sexual act itself does not constitute an interference in the normal procreation process, like what occurs in the case of contraception where the procreative process is deliberately interrupted by artificial devices like pills and condoms, but rather, the act itself, though done in the menopausal stage, is still ordered toward the procreative process, only that no conception will occur simply because the woman can no longer bear children by natural causes.

The Catechism addresses this: see CCC 2368-2370.

The marital act has two aspects, unitive and procreative. Also, it is a means of sacremental grace. I should just put this in my sig line as I mention it frequently, but Christopher West's unpacking of Pope John Paul's Theology of the Body is wonderful. Your friend and her husband can learn so much about God's gift of sexuality and what it means for them. West's website.

The distinction between this act and contraception is quite clear. While menopausal sex does not result in pregnancy, there is no outside interference done with the entire process, because the condition of the woman's reproductive organs itself does not allow it [pregnancy] anymore; in other words, nature itself no longer allows pregnancy, while in sex with the use contraception, there is an intentional and actual interference in the process.

The loving act, the unitive aspect is still present in menopausal sex, while the procreative aspect, though already hindered by natural causes, is still respected by the man and woman.

Why don't you just turn this around and ask her where in Church teachings does it say you cannot have sex if you cannot conceive? If her theory were true than it would be a sin to only have sex during fertile periods.

Remember also that Sarah had to have had sex with Abraham in order to conceive, and in order for us to know she was barren, meant they must've been still having sex. So I don't know the exact Church Teaching, but obviously Church Teaching can't contradict Scripture either.

Absolutely! It is an expression of love between a husband and wife.

Yes, it is allowed but it still must end with intercourse. I am saying this because there have been people in the past here who thought that sex after menopause did not have to end this way because they would not be able to conceive.
