Do women need to wear headcoverings to new TLMs?
Hello (from someone who has never attended a TLM). So if we attend it once our priest puts the TLM in place will the women need to have their heads covered? (Not that I'm oppposed to it -just want to be prepared.)

Yes it is the norm for a TLM.

It's no longer a Canonical requirement, but still a good idea.

Re: Do women need to wear headcoverings to new TLMs?
The bishop himself will say a Latin mass for the feast of the Assumption in august!!!
I've never been to a Latin mass before!! I'm gonna try and talk my family into going. (Burlington is a couple of hours away.)
And I'm a girl.......so am I gonna have to cover my head? And, if I do cover my head.....what am I supposed to put on it??

A hat or a mantilla is the usual choice.

You can also wear a head scarf or a snood.

Oh so that's what those lacey-doodads are called, mantillas? (How is that pronounced anyway?) I've seen photos of people wearing those!
A snood? What is a snood??
*rummaging through closet* Hmmm....all I have are baseball caps, clown hats, or a headscarf that's neon pink and glows in the dark........I don't think any of those are right.....
I bet my mom would know what to do! She's old enough to remember the pre-Vatican II days!

I've gone to the TLM indult from time to time, and I have never worn headcoverings. Most of the women do not.

I go every Sunday and I would say 95% cover their heads. Even the teenagers and young ones.

Re: Do women need to wear headcoverings to new TLMs?
If you choose to do so as it is not mandatory, you do not need to wear a mantilla, AKA, the lacey doily thing. As a practice in a parish where the TLM is already well entrenched, as opposed to a parish where the TLM is just starting to be offered, it might make a woman feel more comfortable.
Those women who choose to cover their heads can wear:
- a mantilla.
- a chapel veil.
- a headscarf.
- any scarf.
- a hat that goes with your outfit.
- something off those Jewish sites that sell kepah.
- a really big headband.
- a really big bow on the top of your head.
- one of those triangle scarffy things that has strings to tie it in place.
- a babuska.
- clean and pretty hanky.
- a big hat from one of those lovely milliner shops, if you're going to wear one of those beautiful Sunday suits or dresses of similar distinction.
I have been to a certain parish in our diocese that only has NO up to this point. It is interesting to note that the younger women of this parish choose to cover their heads, usually with mantillas, for the NO. It is the older women that do not cover.
BTW, before it's said, when St. Paul was talking about "veiling" he did not mean lacey doily things. History points to a veil much thicker than lace, similar to a burkha or chador, currently worn in middle eastern countries today.

Re: Do women need to wear headcoverings to new TLMs?
Veiling would apply more to modesty and the simple head covering would have more to do with obedience.

I just thought I'd ditto you. "Veiling" is not in the liturgical books, and is no longer in canon law. Still, it would be most in spirit with that Mass (and the 2000 one, for that matter) for ladies to cover their heads when attending.

Re: Do women need to wear headcoverings to new TLMs?
My wife and I have been going to various TLMs for quite some time. Our children are spread out from Washington and Oregon all the way down to Southern California, so we taken the opportunity to visit various parishes and chapels in our travels to see them. I really haven't paid much attention, but when I asked my wife, she told me that she found it interesting to see if head coverings are the norm or not, and when so, what type were worn.
From the very beginning, she has always worn a mantilla, and has quite a collection. As for her observations, she says that her non-scientific observations indicate that, in general, the further North we travel, the more likely it would be to see head coverings. But, it also seems to her that it depends on the priest also. The younger priests seem to her to be more often "encouraging" of wearing a head covering, while the older priests are often somewhat more ambivalent about wearing one. She also agrees that often, especially in more urban regions, it is the younger ladies who are more often wearing something. But from other comments, I can see that it probably is simply more dependent on the local customs than anything else.
As an aside, though she’s found a local Hispanic seamstress who makes lovely mantillas, in the past she has purchased quite a number on eBay. I did a quick search there and found four pages of very nice looking mantillas in a wide range of pricing, including several Felix Mantilla baseball cards for any Cubs fans out there. I also did a quick check of various online Catholic sources I use and found that quite a few have mantillas also.
For TraderTif, there are two common pronunciations of “mantilla”.
They are… man-til-uh which follows English conventions.
And… man-tee-uh which follows the Spanish convention of double "L" being silent.

I found an interesting article arguing that the veiling of women in Mass, not just TLM but any Mass, is still canonically binding. I got convinced by the arguments, I would like to know if this is really true, if someone has disproved this argument...it certainly looks like a disasterous omission of the church to let this law go unobserved so wide-rangingly... here's a link to the article:
