Another site:

This is CA poster PhilVaz's site, and has RealAudio links at the top and MP3 links at the bottom. Included are several debates, conversion stories, EWTN programs, and Da Vinci Code debunking lectures.

You're not kidding. I was stunned by the quality of his sample clips - much better than the Christian rap I used to hear as an evangelical.

PODCASTS
This post links to HUNDREDS of free and freely-downloadable Catholic MP3 files, (however, caveat emptor) and it's NOT some kind of spam!

Podcastalley.com Directory

http://podcastalley.com/search.php?searchterm=catholic

This currently lists 186 Podcasts Categorized by their producers (caveat emptor) as 'Catholic.' Each of these has at least one (some have hundreds) of original MP3 programs. I'm especially fond of Fr Roderick vonHoegen's StarQuest Podcast Network ( http://www.sqpn.com ) which carries things like the Verbum Domini podcast, and the award-winning Rosary Army Podcast, and Fr vonHoegen's own Daily Breakfast and less-frequent Catholic Insider podcasts. For amazing time travel back to HFPJPIItG's passing and the Interregnum and Conclave, be sure to check the early Catholic Insider podcasts, starting with episode CI#20 near the bottom of this page:
http://www.sqpn.com/scripts/catholicinsider.php
Listen to them in sequence for the full effect!

Fr Roderick is an archdiocesan priest in Amersfoort, the Netherlands (Archdiocese of Utrecht) and he jumped on a plane with his recorder on March 30th, 2005 when he heard that the Pope John Paul (the great) was mortally ill. As he continued podcasting from Rome, CNN and AP picked up on him within days as "The Podcasting Priest." Overnight he went from a few dozen listeners to 25,000 downloads of one single podcast over the night of the death of our late Pope.

It's really fascinating to listen to all of the podcasts in sequence from the start, because you will travel along on the entire journey with Fr Roderick -- and I'm sure you will love his engaging, and refreshingly unaffected style....

...Which is HUGLEY similar to Jerry's refreshing and equally unaffected style! That's right, JUST AS GOOD AS JERRY in every way! And EQUALLY EXCELLENT!

(* whew, that was close *)

Particularly interesting are his 'soundeeing tours' of famous churches and other places in Rome and other European locations. He uses a stereo microphone, and he'll take you inside Vatican Radio, for instance, poking your head with him into studios with nuns and priests sitting at digital audio workstations and huge mixer boards! After an hour, you will actually feel as though you've been there. You see, he's the "Catholic Insider," -- get it? He can take you places you need to be wearing a cassock or habit to go inside normally! There is a whole sort of 'spy' theme that is so light-handed yet serves to establish a flavor that is just perfect. Some of his most vocal supporters aren't even Catholic, they just love how he explains the topics he chooses.

Note to Jerry: This is one wired priest! How about a CAL hour on-air with the original "Podcasting Priest," live from Amersfoort? He's even got his own studio set up. And how about interviewing his SQPN contributors? He trained at the Pontifical Gregorian University as a theologian, so maybe you could have him on call for CAL open forum shows? Just an idea.

Through the magic of archived radio, you can join a crowd of thousands who gathered in St. Peter's Square outside the Papal apartment window just after they finished praying the Rosary the night before he died. Put on headphones and you can easily imagine being there. The only sound among all those people was the fountain in the square. It's an astonishing moment.

Jerry, you could even put together clips from his past podcasts to lead in segments of your CAL show with him!

Apple iTunes Podcast Directory

Also, if you go to the 'Podcast' window in Apple iTunes ( free download for Mac or Windows from http://www.itunes.com if you don't have it ) and search the word 'Catholic' you'll get some 150 results. Each of those podcast feeds has multiple MP3 programs, some numbering in the hundreds, and all free. Caveat Emptor: some organizations such as the American Atheist Society will associate 'Catholic' as a search with their program precisely to show up in front of people looking for the word 'Catholic.' It is kind of interesting to see exactly who pulls this cheap little stunt. You may also find podcasts whose descriptions include the word 'Catholic' specifically for purposes of mockery.

It is interesting to note that Catholic Insider has been in or near the top 10 of Podcast Alley's listener rating system for over a year--right alongside a podcast by people who devise filthy little scenarios as a mechanism for product name placement of sex-toy and condom manufacturers.

SUPPORT YOUR CATHOLIC PODCASTERS (including Catholic Answers Live!)
Turns out that a podcast that becomes popular brings the podcast producer a bill at the end of the month to pay for the downloads. Many of these are done by individuals for the sheer love of their faith, so slip them a few bucks if you can.

I don't know if these links belong here but I have had great enjoyment of late listening to the archived broadcasts of the "Our Life in Christ" radio program which I discovered at Ancient Faith Radio. They are actually Orthodox ministries, but to one who comes from the Protestant tradition I am still soaking in all manner of historical and traditional teaching. I stream it at work and must pause it when my athiest employer enters our office, it has also sparked an interest from my co-worker and allowed me to dialogue with her about the historic and traditional Church.

I also stream the audio Bible from:

Default PDA Apologetics is cool!

For those of you not on John Martignoni's e-mail blast, I thought I'd mention something he wrote about a few weeks ago. It's a Bible Study/Apologetics tool for your PDA. If you've got a Palm device or something running Windows Mobile 5, and you're an armchair apologist like me, this is one of those don't-really-need-it-but-it's-really-cool-to-have things that could be very helpful. Particularly if you're like me and have long-ish commutes on public transportation.

Here's the link: http://www.pelkie.com/Detail.bok?no=1

This guy has developed 44 pages of talking points, commentary, etc., for various Catholic apologetics issues: Baptism, Purgatory, Church, even Jehovah's Witnesses. All you do is call up your Bible on your PDA, click on a bookmark to particular verse, and then you've got some helpful commentary right there underneath the scripture.

Cost: $10. You can download a copy of the entire Bible for free, but I wanted a digital version of my well-highlighted Catholic Study Bible. It cost me about $30.

Let's say you're out with friends. Someone says the Church is wrong to Baptize infants. "Well," you say, "Let's examine some scripture verses..." Then, you call up your handly list of bookmarked verses pertaining to baptism, and then the fun begins!

Now, practically speaking, it's an inferior method to actually knowing the Bible inside and out, but it's a great learning/teaching tool, potentially. I finally got it up and running this morning, and I can see how this will be very helpful for both my apologetics "work" and 8th grade CCD class.

If you're a hyper-techno-geek like me, this is a must have. All your apologetics notes (you can add tons more), AND the scripture right there in your PDA.

That is all.

Red face Re: PDA Apologetics is cool!

I have used Olive Tree Bible Reader for quite some time. I have never quite figured out how to do what you suggested until now. I have to admit I have gotten some strange looks from my Pastor and Deacon when in a meeting they asked someone to read a bible verse and I pull out my PDA so I can follow along.

Did you install the bookmarks and notes already? Once you're familiar with the Olive Tree software, it's faster than flipping through pages of scripture. If all your notes are properly "in place," it can be devastating.

I just bought the notes and will be installing them shortly. I have been thinking of doing this myself, but I didn't quite know how to do it. But $10, I decided to buy them.
