The mother of a friend of mine was in the habit of saying "Thanks be to God" when she was given a compliment. She would bake a pie and you might say, "This applie pie is terrific!" and she would respond "Thanks be to God." My feeling is that she prayed without ceasing, and prayed that the pie would turn out well as she was making it. When given a compliment on the pie, she would divert all thanks and praise for the pie to God; and she did this in full humility and sincerity.
Sadly, I don't think such dependence upon God, humility, and traditional spirituality is common anymore.
