Arrow Photo Editing Instructions

This is a walk through for anyone who is unsure about using photo editing software to cut and resize their photos...

Adobe Photoshop

1. If you have adobe photoshop load your picture by hitting File Open , select the picture that you want, and open it.

2. If you want to crop it use the mouse to drag an outline around the part that you want to keep.... then go up to Image on the menu bar and select crop. Repeat if you need to.

3. If all you want to do is size your picture appropriately or you are done cropping, then go up to Image on the menu bar, and select Image size.

Now comes the tricky part... when the size window pops up look at the boxes that say pixels, they should both read no more than 100 pixels. They are tied together so that as you change one the other dimension will change as well in direct proportion. Just change the largest number to 100 and that should do it.

4. Once you have properly sized you picture now comes time to save it. Go up to the menu bar, select File and then select Save as. Now (and this is really important) go to file type on the window that comes up and select JPEG, then hit the "Save" button. It will ask you what quality setting to use, but just hit Ok as it really doesn't matter.

That should get you through. If you have problems or don't have the proper software, then send me a PM and I will walk you through, or if you just want me to do it, send the picture to my e-mail adress and I will do it for you.

Peace!

Note:

Given the nature of this post and its general interest for participants, I've made it a sticky. For anyone who was about to ask Tyler "How did you do that?" the answer is that it's a moderator function.

Here is another program for those of you who don't have adobe photoshop and really want to be do it yourselfers. If you have Microsoft Windows operating system, it came with a program called Paint.

Instructions for Microsoft Paint

1. If you don't know how to find out if you have paint or don't know where it is, open the START menu go to programs then to Accessories, then open Paint.

2. Now that Paint is open go to File and select open, then find the picture that you want to use and hit open.

3. Now that your picture is open, you are going to want to make it a little bigger so that you can work with it easier. Under Edit hold your mouse over zoom, and then select large size. This will not change the size of your picture but will zoom in for you.

First way to size
(the easy way)

4. For those who want to just cut out a square that includes their picture with out a lot of hassle, use the dotted square tool found on the left side toolbar, and draw a square around the part that you want to keep. Then go up to Edit and hit cut, the part of the picture that you want should be gone. Then go up to File and hit new, then go up to edit and hit paste. Your picture should be smaller and just of what you want.

Second way to size
(for those which the first step won't work) (harder)

4. Now that you can see your picture you want to adjust the little blue squares in the right bottom, corner and side of the picture untill you have cut it down to a size that you think will work.

5. To check to see if your picture is small enough, go up to Image and select image atributes. Look to see that where it says pixels both spots read 100 or less, if they don't then you need to repeat step 4 until you have gotten down to that size.

6. When it is all ready save and upload your picture.

IF you have problems along the way or need more help send me a private message, e-mail or instant message with AIM and I will help you. Peace!

If you want to use Paint Shop, the steps are basically the same as using Adobe Photo Shop.

1. Open your picture in Paint Shop
2. Crop to the part of the picture you want to show up

a. Click on the Crop button.
b. Select the area that you want to keep. (Remember that most pictures are saved at 72ppi which means that a 100 pixel x 100 pixel square is close to 1 1/2 inches.)
c. Select crop to size from the Image menu.

3. After cropping the picture, make sure it is the correct size.

a. Select resize from the Image menu.
b. Select pixel size.
c. Change the larger number to 100 (the other number will automatically adjust).

4. Save your picture (File - Save). Consider saving your picture with another name by selecting Save As instead of Save .

You are now ready to upload it to your account.

For Macintosh users there is a shareware program ($35.00) called Graphic Converter that is as good as or better than more expensive commercial software.

If you are using a Mac, iPhoto will do just about anything you need and it is included with Mac OSX 10.3 Panther.

If you are looking for free software, the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) will run on just about any system and can be found at:

IrfanView is a free and easy program that can do resizing and a lot more. Another great free program is PhotoFiltre, almost as good as PhotoShop.

Every single time I try and upload an image I get this error:

Warning: filesize(): Stat failed for C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\php113.tmp (errno=2 - No such file or directory) in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\forums\includes\funct ions_file.php on line 226

pixel size is fine, and the file size is fine...I don't understand

Question Re: Photo Editing Instructions

Ditto! I don't get any error. It just says "Thank you for updating your profile." But nothing has happened. No photo, no changes to profile.

Confused,

I have the same problem. I have uploaded my JPG file several times, it's 100 x 100 and 44KB, and once it's done, no picture shows in my profile. What am I doing wrong, or is there a problem with the upload?

Yep, me too.

ALSO:
I was just instructed by an admin that my 63.4 kB picture is too big, because it doesn't measure 100x100 or smaller. Which then means that the instructions are incorrect. The requirements say it should be either 100x100 pixels or 64kB max, whichever is smaller, which means either requirement may be met. It should say that *both* figures are maximums that cannot be exceeded.

Nevertheless, even after squeezing my picture down to a miniscule 100x100, it still doesn't take the URL or an upload. I'm getting tired of this.

100x100?? Why so tiny, anyway??

OK, it's good to see that I'm not alone in being unable to upload a picture. I'm trying with a jpg.

Any help available?
