Hi, I have always wanted to go to church on a Sunday. It will be my first time though. What do I do? Just turn up? What can I expect, Questions and answers please

Just turn up - some parishes are very welcoming to new faces, others not so much. But be assured you will just be one of the crowd, the gathered community. It does take time to get to know people no matter the setting, so the more often you attend Mass the more the parish will get to know you and as simply one of them. You may like to introduce yourself to the parish priest either after Mass or perhaps with an appointment - but this is not at all necessary nor required.
You just may get more responses if you put your intention to attend Mass - and your wondering about it - into the Spirituality Forum.
Will be keeping you in prayer............Barb

Yep, just turn up, best not sit too close to the front (you may want to see what the people do at different times as well as the priest). If you can, follow their actions - sit, stand and kneel when they do - or you can stay seated the whole time, which is OK for a first timer.

Two main points to bear in mind. First - at one point people shake hands with their neighbours as a 'sign of peace'. Feel free to join in if you want - the appropriate thing is to say 'peace be with you' to each person while shaking if you want to say something.

Secondly - I don't know if you've experienced communion (receiving blessed bread and wine) in other Christian churches.

Catholics have what is called closed communion - if you've not been received into the Catholic Church and instructed in the sacraments of reconciliation/penance/confession and Holy Communion you mustn't go up and receive it.

Just scoot your legs to the side to let other people get in and out of your pew and stay put in your seat.

Just turn up. It feels like God is holding you in His arms.
