Poor Fred ... I know beagles are hounds and are bred for such things, but really - such an adorably goofy dog shouldn't have to do that, in my opinion!

Maybe your cage would need its own table, above Fred-height? (I'm sure you've thought of all this yourself, I'm just puzzling it through for my own entertainment )

I would probably keep it in a room that is off limits to the dogs. I have one room that is totally off limits and one to which they only have partial access.

You know, most people think beagles are only for hunting (at least here where I live) but my dogs' vetr told me that beagles actually make excellent pets. Judging from my three, I would have to agree.

I assume your cats are continuing to improve?

That always helps - we have one (a storage room) the cats aren't allowed in, and one that's easy to reserve for cat quarantine for a very sick/injured kitty (or, in this case, a demented kitten that won't sleep UNLESS he's sequestered away from the rest of the herd ).

I heartily agree - I'm in an area where there's not a whole lot of hunting (other than the odd lunatic shooting at raccoons), so I only know of beagles as hyper-but-fun friends ... and I think they're wonderful pets!

There's good days and bad days. *grin* Cosmo has been backsliding a bit - we had quite a week of trying to get him to drink water on his own, experimenting with different bowls ... he's drinking on his own again now, but also making a huge mess with his foot in the dish. He has more of those confused spells, too, but he's moving around well and eating a lot, so that's heartening.

Otis (with the big kidney) is FINALLY feeding himself dry food, after a week of needing extensive coaxing, cuddles, and an endless supply of new (cheap, and NOT the sort of healthy thing I'd prefer him to eat) tinned food, and hasn't piddled anywhere naughty in ... goodness, about 2 weeks? That made me feel better - he was just so listless, and not wanting to eat.

Morris (returned from the shelter) is the happiest kitty you ever saw, and is still supervising my bath - with many purrs - each evening.

Martha (old, diabetic, and has liver problems) just returned from a few days at the vet ... every few months, her liver rebels and she can't keep her food down, so she ends up being on IV for a few days to get her back in shape. She's doing well, and happy to be home (and hasn't been sick since she's returned, so that's nice).

And Deja (the other old diabetic kitty) was just taken to have a couple of days on IV herself ... she's getting worse for sleeping for 8 or more hours at a stretch and not eating during that time, so when her insulin hits its peak and she's got such an empty stomach, her blood sugar gets too low and she starts vomiting and can't keep food down. *sigh* So she's had a couple of rough nights, and the usual medications aren't settling her tum, so the IV will sort her out while we wait for blood tests to come back, just to make sure nothing else is wrong with the old girl ... she's getting thinner lately, which is sort of normal for her age, but I just want to make sure there's nothing else wrong.

And to get through a night without scrubbing the carpet, of course. *grin*

Thank you for asking!

I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to respond. I've been sick lately, and have been having some medical problems of my own.

I'm glad you have Morris back. It disturbed me to read that you took him to a shelter, so I'm glad you were able to go back and get him. I hope your two diabetic cats will improve and feel better. It sounds like Cosmo is continuing to improve as well. That's good news. I'm glad. I always feel sorry for animals who are sick and hurting, because they can't vocalize what's wrong and I'm sure they're scared and confused by what's happening. I've always loved animals, and in recent years I've become somewhat of an animal rights activist.

Fred is definitely hyper, and fun too. The SPCA workers were thrilled when I told them I was adopting him as a pet and not a hunting dog. I personally can't stand the hunting culture here. Most of the hunters here mistreat their dogs and don't engage in fair hunting practices either. Many of them violate state hunting laws. Many get reported and fined and/or imprisoned every year. I'm glad.

Keep posting, I pray all your cats will be okay.

Me too ... that was an awful thing to do. I am SO grateful he's back!

Doing well so far! Both girls are back home, and seem to be feeling great so far.

Heaven knows the poor little guys need it. It's awful the way people don't seem to realize what they put their animals through!

As they should. In theory, I can live with ethical hunting if you have no other way of getting FOOD. Beyond that ... sorry, I can't see any excuse for it at all. You wanna shoot things, go to the firing range and blast the heck out of paper targets, for heaven's sake.

Deb,
I could hardly finish reading your prayer request, the tears just won't stop. It would be my honour to pray for Cosmo.

Lord Jesus, Saint Francis, I come before you and ask from my heart that you touch and care for Cosmo, give him peace and healing Lord. Our precious creatures, great and small need our special care and love, and in turn give us absolute unconditional love. I humbly beg that you cover Cosmo with your precious Blood and touch him. Take his pain and comfort him. Saint Francis you have such compassion for animals, I ask for your prayers for healing. Lord Jesus, give Deb the comfort and peace that she needs to get through this stressful time. I lay these requests at the foot of your cross and beg for this healing for Cosmo. Amen and Amen.
God Bless Deb, and please let us know how Cosmo is. I will continue to keep both of you in my prayers.
P.S. I have asked many times for prayers for my Chihuahuas, who are like my "babies".
DeeDee

Aww, bless you, dear DeeDee!

Cosmo's been home since Christmas Eve; still blind in the one eye, and sometimes still weak on the one side, but still much improved. He's eating well (but not gaining weight, for some reason), but still having difficulty with drinking water ... he did well the first few nights, then started standing in the water dish to drink, then knocking the dish over to drink ... we've experimented with different dishes, hoping this would help him to see the water, but I'm not sure it's helping. He wakes up a few times through the night and howls at me to give him water from a feeding syringe.

Still, he's in much better shape than he was at the beginning of December, so we're very grateful! Thank you so much for praying for him - he still needs it.

How many Chihuahuas do you have, and what are their names?

I've come to the conclusion that most people don't care. At least, that's my conclusion based on what I've observed from people here where I live.

I don't have a problem with hunting for food, either. After all, you have to keep in mind that people are more important than animals, no matter how much we love them. This is why I refuse to support PETA (in addition to their many anti-Christian activities/statements) I completely disagree with hunting animals for their pelts, though. Many animals today are hunted only for their fur, and that's wrong. (Then you have fur farms and factory farms, which are separate, ugly matters entirely.) In the past, there were legitimate reasons for people to wear animal skins, but not anymore. With all the cotton, polyester, and other materials that don't come from animals, there just isn't a legitimate excuse for anyone to wear fur. I'm an excellent shot, by the way. I learned how to fire a gun at the firing range, and all I've ever shot in my life are paper targets.

That isn't good. Have you been to a doctor? (please forgive me if I'm prying - I'm a girl, we just do this )

Yeah, that's probably an accurate conclusion, if a depressing one. (sorry, I'm in a weird mood - I turn 41 on Monday, and I've spent most of being 40 feeling that the world somehow changed a lot in the years I've spent buried in work, school, Mum and cats - and I'm not that sure I fit in. I would like to think this is just a stupid, extended period of self-pity that will pass.)

That and they're insane. I'm uncomfortable with some of their more high-profile supporters ... perhaps I'm just being cynical, it just seems they've found a cause to hitch their wagons to in hopes that they'll be noticed. They can get back to me when they've stopped wearing leather shoes.

VERY heartily agreed!

That's an excellent skill to have, and I'm impressed! I've held my uncle's shotgun once, wanting him to teach me how to shoot, and I found it heavy and utterly awkward, and was quite embarrassed by that. I didn't want to be a wimp about it, but I couldn't imagine myself getting the hang of that! So it's good that you can - being able to handle a gun is a skill everyone should have.

Yes, thanks for your concern. I've seen a doctor and I'm seeing a physical therapist for an unrelated issue. It's going to be more of a long term thing, I think. (At least with the physical therapist.)

Happy birthday! I hope your depression passed and you were able to celebrate your birthday joyfully! Look at it this way: The only alternative to getting older is death, and I'm not quite ready for that yet, so I choose getting older!

I'm extremely uncomfortable with many of their famous supporters. Without naming names, most of them aren't exactly the most respectable people in the world. I'm convinced that most of PETA's celebrity supporters only support the organization because it's the trendy thing to do now. (And don't even get me started on all these ad campaigns they have now that feature various naked celebrities.... ) The international headquarters for PETA is located about 60 miles from where I live, so they're in the news quite a bit here. They're quite annoying, and not as pure as the driven snow they claim to emulate. About two years ago there was a big scandal here because PETA had a campaign going in which they went to local animal shelters and adopted dogs and cats in order to find homes for them, to prevent them from being euthanized. It was leaked to the local press that the animals had actually been suffocated in plastic bags. When the police and the SPCA investigated, many cats and dogs were found dead, in sealed plastic bags. Criminal charges were filed, and PETA supposedly fired all the offending employees, but I remain suspicious. I just don't trust PETA anymore, and haven't for quite some time.
