Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
We finally got Catholic radio in the S F Bay area. During the day when the sun is shining I can hear it. I listened to Catholic Answers for the first hour with no problem but when the second hour (4:00pm) started my radio started losing it. I had to go back to the internet to hear the rest of the show. I'm down in the South Bay area near San Jose.
Anyone else have problems after the sun starts to go down?

Re: Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
Stations need to be certain that their signals stay within their approved areas, as specified in their FCC licenses. After sundown, AM stations need to power down to avoid having their signals cross over into unapproved areas, which can happen due to mysterious forces in the ionosphere that can strengthen their power.
This problem goes away during daylight savings time.

Re: Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
This has gotten little publicity in the Bay Area. Only after the fact did Catholic San Francisco cover it. Current issue.
The signal is 5000 watts daytime but drops to 1000 in the evening. Why some folks on the fringes of the Bay Area lose the signal at night.
Doug Sherman has asked everyone in the Bay Area who is interested in this to spread the word via bumper stickers or whatever. It is a huge 15 million gamble for IHR. The church officially has supported the station coming here in exchange for the Bay Area bishops (all quite liberal except for Vigeron) being given a daily free hour to present their views on social issues and such. I think that is fine. Previous bishops here have fought generally orthodox Catholic media outlets like EWTN from coming to the Bay Area.
The population is 8 million or almost in the Bay Area (4th to LA, NYC and Chicago) so this will give a huge boost to IHR's reach.
But the Catholic church is in big decline here as a percentage of the popualtion despite the large growth generally here. So where this ends up is anyone's guess. To keep KSFB on the air significant donations will need to flow from Bay Area listerners.
According to Doug Sherman the new KSFB emerges from one of the Bay Area's most historic radio stations. KOIT and before that KYA.

I live in Contra Costa County and usually try to catch the Sacramento station. What is the channel number?

I don't know the number of the Sacramento station, but 1260 AM is the number in San Francisco -- perhaps you can get this one -- I truly enjoy it and am so glad we finally got a Catholic radio station in San Francisco.

Re: Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
I got such a kick out of hearing that my growing-up radio station, KYA Radio Twelve Sixty, Emperor Gene Nelson et al, had become the SF area's Catholic station.

Re: Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
I heard IHR for the first time yesterday in the bay Area. Generally I liked it. The variety of programs and the spots are quite good. I was somewhat disappointed in CAL -= I felt the repsonses to several questions were weak. maybe it was the host. Apparently the host varies.
I did hear about a PBS program coming on now in part do to the effort of Dr. Arroyo. Its a musical version of the XMAS story sung by Protestant and Catholic choirs from Dublin. Sounds awesome.

The greater Bay Area goes from Sonoma county on the north to Santa Clara county on the south. SF/Penninsla on west to Solano county on east. About 200 by 100 miles.
Concord?Martinez are not fringe - Vacaville and Brentwood would be.

Re: Immaculate Heart Radio in S F Bay Area
Speaking as a Protestant on my journey to the shores of the Tiber, I am thrilled IMR has come to the SF Bay Area. I am so tired of the pablum and contridictory teaching on Protestant radio stations. IMR has KFAX and Family Radio beat by far. I too am concerned about the acceptance of IMR. Our pastor has told us that the SF Bay Area is 90 percent unchurched. I guarantee part of that 90 percent are many Catholics who have turned their backs on the mother church. The Catholic Universities around here are a joke. They are very liberal, full of men and women who support abortion, birth control and women priests.
I can't speak for the parishes in our area, but I have a feeling they are dabbling in practices foreign to the magisterium.
Fortunately, at least one, that I know of, has 24 hour adoration. That is Our Lady of Peace Parish. I don't know much about the priests, but at their bookstore has a lot of good books that uphold the teachings of the mother church. They also have a TV that usually has EWTN on it.
So...welcome to KSFB and all Bay Area listeners. If you live in the South Bay let me know what is a good parish.
Thanks.

I agree, but when I leave my work in Pacheco (Martinez/Concord), I hear Mexican music for about the first 1 1/2 miles westward, then the station begins to clear. This is in the evening.
I listen during the day, but listen to MP3's of CALive on the way home now.

I'd die if my Ipod went dead. I have more than a week's worth of shows I listen to on my train commute. The shows may be a week or two later but I stll get the benefit.

You sound just like me, friend. I've been Catholic for 3 years this Easter, and soak up CA Live like a sponge. I download them, fill a CD, then listen on my ride. Now, I almost wish my commute was longer than 20 minutes so I could listen longer.
Welcome Home!

At dusk radio signals drop off. So a 5000 watt station won't cover such a large region at night. Only the megawatt stations do. 10000 and up.
