Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
Ok...where was everyone this past week? Don't answer that. I was not exercising nearly as much as I should have...but maybe everyone kept up, and just didn't post here. I am an optimist...I vote for the latter.
Ok--another week...let's start the new year off right!
My goals for the week:
5 days cardio--45 minutes each day
3 days strength -- 20 minutes each session
This year, I'd like to get back into running...and maybe run in a race or two. We shall see!
Praise be to God for our health.
I leave you with this cute cartoon....

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
Actually I didn't do half bad last week.I had just under 40 miles for the week. But this week I have off NY day, so I will be happy getting 30 miles in.

hey that is awesome! I wish I could say the same. I am determined to get back into running though--if I have something I enjoy doing as the goal--then I should stick with it. I have to build back up remember, because of my foot problem this past year. Can u believe it took nearly a year to heal?

Good for you..yes a funny cartoon..I am a lifelong bodybuilder and am 100% supportive of what you appear to be doing and anyone else..as my favorite president once declared to the first boy scout jamboree ..100 years ago..'strive for a sound mind in a sound body'..good luck..dont worry about the nay-sayers..they just smirk from the couch and will pay for it sooner or later! I train 6 days a week...three days with weights...the other days stretching, jogging (in place on a cushion) never outside, bad for the knees, and my sitting pulse is 54 a min...so many of my ole school chums are pushing up daises and I miss them..but they smoked, drank hard booze, and never trained once they hit middle age..bad mistake..all the best..wave as you jog by....

Hi Nino--welcome to the thread. Question for you--you say you jog on a cushion...is that like a mini trampoline? I have seen those in gyms, and it has me thinking...I have a treadmill, but that's what caused me to have plantar fascitis to begin with. (because it didn't have much in the way of 'give,' like absorbing the shock)

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
Last week was not too bad, I was able to get in 55 miles, a bit less than I wanted, but I had a cold. That excuses it, right?
This week’s goal is 70-80 miles running. Anyway, I applaud any of you that can run on a treadmill. The boredom I can handle (barely), but running on one even once always leaves me with some minor injury (usually shin splints) that prevents me from using a treadmill for a couple days.

I beg to disagree. I run 60-80 miles a week, all outside and I do not have any problems with my knees. It seems that most knee problems in runners are due to improper/old shoes, muscle imbalances or excessive mileage increases...all things that can be dealt with by care and patience (not the easiest thing).

Many marathon runners have bad knees...I actually don't like the pounding feeling of the road, but still love to run. I wear Saucony shoes, which are really great for long distance running, etc.
When you say 'excessive mileage increases' are you speaking of suddenly upping the mileage in one day or something like this?

Not a bad start to my week.....just under 8.54 miles. This year is MY year......I am going to take better care of myself than I ever did!

Who actually listens to their body and takes time off when they need to though? (Not me ). I also dislike the pounding of the roads, at least until mile 6 or 7 when I warm up and start to relax. So I do all my long runs (and as many other ones as possible) on trails. Always with Montrails as they have a protective plate that keeps you from feeling the rocks on 8-10+ hour runs .

All those running experts usually suggest increasing weekly (and long run) mileage pretty slowly, at 10% I think. So trying to go from 30 to 40 or 40 to 60 miles per week would be excessive in my opinion. Then again, my running log for the past couple weeks is 80, 65 (injured), 2, 0, 6, 10, 30, 30, 45, 65, 55, and 40 so far… I am not very good at following advice.

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
This year started out well. I ran 3 miles and biked 30 today.
My first scheduled event of this year is a marathon on 30 Mar which means I'll be training through Lent. Anyone have any experience with training and fasting?

Kudos to you! That is great. I actually do have experience with working out to high levels, with fasting. About two years ago, I was 'training' for a charity race (I backed out ) and remembered fasting, during Lent. I would say that on the days that you are training harder, you need to be careful not to skimp too much. I would possibly replace a meal with a protein shake, so that you at least get the protein and energy from that. When I was fasting--I would try to make the snacks (smaller meals) as protein dense as possible. I didn't fast daily--about 5 days per week, so I would arrange my harder exercise days for days when I was not on the fast. But, be careful...overdoing it without enough 'fuel' can be harmful to your body. I wish you great success!!

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
I think my New Year's resolution needs to be for me to actually participate in this thread since I haven't in several months (which happened to coincide with me completely falling off my exercise & eating routines).

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
Managed just under 8 miles for the day yesterday. Today I have an appointment with my diabetic counselor to see about my diet. Hope to make the "COSMO" cover by the end of the year.

Re: Exercise Support Group -- week of 12/30
Hi, everyone. Happy New Year.
I haven't run in two weeks. I got sick just before Christmas, but haven't been able to take time to rest much. Christmas was really busy, and we had two Christmas parties at our house this past weekend. Along with that, we had to move my wife's warehouse. So I've been way too busy, and just now am feeling like I can start running again. I'm going to try 3 miles tomorrow, and see how it goes.
