Default Best 10 Catholic Books of all Time

Hi:

My two oldest kids are getting ready to be confirmed, and would like them to read a few books in preparation.

Other than the Bible, I would like to hear what people think would be good books to read.

My suggestion would be Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton.

Any thoughts?

Scott

Parts of Augustine's Confessions or Francis's Introduction to the Devout Life have been helpful to millions and surely would be a good read for anyone being confirmed or wanting to start to get deeper into the faith.

Get them the Complete C.S. Lewis Classics. About $18 for all of his magnificent writings (Miracles, Mere Christianity, the Screwtape Letters, the Problem of Pain, etc.)

History of Christendom by Warren H. Carroll - Its a 5 volume series on the history of the faith, and while it is high level given the fact that it spans over 2000 years, it is a very Catholic history of the world and such understanding should go hand in hand with knowledge of the faith....at least I think so

What ages are they? If they are kids I surely wouldn't give them Chesterton.

I found "Frequent Confession" by Benedict Baur to be most helpful.

Imitiation of Christ - If they are children this wouldn't apply.

Screwtape Letters

Mere Christianity - This book is often considered an excellent book for people interested in the faith. But it is also a wonderful book for any Christian whereever he or she may be in there journey. Peter Kreeft says everybody in the world should read this book 6 times. Not sure where he got the number but I see his point.

I have been struggling to look for a book that I may be able to get my early 20's daughters to actually sit down and read. I just went to Amazon and looked at what this book might have to offer. It appears to be what I have been looking for.

Thanks for the recommendation.

They are high school age.

I would agree Chesterton would give them trouble at first try. Some books you really don't get the first time you read them, but reading them the first time gives you a place from which to read again.

I have many of these books already, but am going to research the ones I don't have on Amazon.
