Default How to build a Prie-Dieu

So I want to build myself a Prie-Dieu for several reasons.

1. Most of them cost 300+ dollars which I don't have.
2. I think it would be nice to dedicate the work to Christ and then use the finished product to continue His praise.
3. It would be a productive use of my free time.

So, the problem is, I have no idea what I am doing.

Does anyone have any detailed plans? I browsed online for some instructions, but all I could find (for 25 dollars no less) was on rosaryshop.com but the plans are for a kneeler that is way to complex for what I want.

So could anyone give me some advice here before I go measure a kneeler in the chapel and just start hacking and nailing wood? And could one of you ladies who is talented in the art of sewing and whatnot suggest how to make the cushioned kneeler part (And safely get it attached to the kneeler?)

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever find any plans for building your own kneeler?

Here's some info on them:
http://www.kneeler.com/
also known as "kneelers". We're looking for plans to build nice, solid wood ones at home.

I googled for a while and found this man's how to site for this one:

http://teigitur.com/

There several pic's and pages to look at including a youtube video. This would be real nice for those (like me) that need one on the cheap. I would say the two variables would be the top shelf height and (and for those like me with to much belly) the kneeling shelf distance from the top shelf.

Seem's like a real sweet and devout fellow too! GF

I know this is an old thread but here is mine. If you are still wanting to build one let me know. This is big enough for me and my son's, or me and my wife to pray together.

God Bless,
DCD

Oh - that is GORGEOUS!!!! I have one that is only a one person prie-dieu, and the kneeler part is not padded which is HORRIBLE on my knees so I don't use it for long periods, only for evening prayer. I would love to know how you did the padding part of yours.

Here is a picture of my DH with our crazy kitty who likes to sit inside the book ledge while I'm praying, or will reach up and look like she's praying - it's very cute to see her do this.

Anyway - I would love to pad the kneeler part as well as the top part because I like to lean forward when I pray (I have a bit of arthritis in my back), and also because if I pad the kneeler the top part will be too low. The man who made this one did not make the top part tall enough.

Liz,

If you are a little crafty then it should not be to hard. One way to get some height is to go with 4" foam. I used 2" for my kneeler. Once you have the foam and material you want, it's just a matter of cutting it to fit and fastening it with staples underneath. Here is a close up of some tacks I used to dress it up.

God Bless,
DCD

Oh yes, I think I can do that. I love the tack detail, I will definitely do that as well!!

I was thinking that I would need to make it a separate piece and attach it somehow, but if all I need to do is just wrap it and staple then I can handle that.

Thanks!!

Wow. Not only am I impressed with the workmanship of that kneeler, but also at how clean you keep your house. 8-)

And that you have a holy water font at the front door - looks like a beautiful Catholic home.

Did you build the kneeler yourself? If so, do you happen to have any plans laying about we could borrow?

Terry

Sorry I have not posted sooner but I have been finishing a altar for me and one for my boys. I can help with the mesaurements. If you like mine I might be able to get the template for the sides. If you want to design something different I could send you some pictures. I have a friend who built mine I just told him what I wanted and then I finished it.

Peace,
DCD

Thanks for your kind remarks. I had to laugh when you posted about the water font. To the right of it on the inside frame of my front door is a mezuzah.

God Bless,
David
