Exercise support thread--week of 2/17/08
Happy Sunday, everyone! It's a great time to continue our care for the Temple of the Holy Spirit (our bodies). We honor God by taking good care of ourselves. So, let's set some goals for the week.
My goal is to run 26 miles, including an 11 mile long run, which I did this morning. I was able to run the entire distance non-stop today. Now I get to rest for the remainder of the day.

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 2/17/08
I am still sore from that kick boxing dvd from Friday evening. I am better--but feel a bit discouraged today. I have been wanting to lose about 15 to 20 lbs. Ok, so I lost 6 lbs 2 weeks ago (I have been following a new eating plan for roughly 4 weeks now), and now I get on the scale today, and I gained back two of those pounds. I eat very healthy--I eat roughly 1500 calories daily, and that is healthy for a female...I actually eat less on days I'm fasting for Lent. I drink 64 oz of water daily...and exercise moderate to intense for about 5-6 days per week. It's discouraging. My husband said that with the strength training I'm doing -- that muscle can be throwing the scale...but my measurements are down 2 inches. I also have a more muscular build I suppose than I did before starting this. So, who knows. It just doesn't make sense to me why the scale went up 2 lbs.

Sharon, you've been the one reminding everyone else that the scale doesn't tell the whole story. Muscle is denser than fat. So, if you're building muscle, and losing inches, and the scale goes up, that makes sense. Remember, the goal is fitness, not just weight loss.

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 2/17/08
In thinking it through--I normally did 80% cardio 20% strength training, normally in the past--but over the last 4 weeks, I have upped the strength training -- but kept the same cardio roughly. I am wondering if also changing around what I'm doing can cause muscle gain? (like circuit training, lunges, squats, yoga, etc) ? I didn't do a lot of targeting lower body work for strength in recent past--so maybe that's it? My dh seems to think that the increased strength training causes a different reading on the scale--but in reality, I am losing fat. Maybe I need a new scale.

I said that? lol Yes, I know--it was just a little surprising to see a 2 lb weight gain, after losing an initial 6 lbs in the first 2 weeks. I know you're right. I do feel stronger, and can see results in different ways--clothes fitting, measurements, and endurance. But, that scale...

Forget the scale. Listen to PF. He's right.
Which reminds me, where is PF? He hasn't posted here in a few weeks.

He has been working a lot (well training still) with Disney, and his schedule is the polar opposite of mine--he gets home around 10:30 or so at night, but soon...he will be working a normal 8 to 4:30 pm shift...once training is through, which we are both happy about. He is getting my oil changed today--bless his heart. I hate doing that stuff. I hope he will post here again soon--when his schedule becomes 'normal' again.
Re: the scale--ok, I just read an article I googled, and it talks about how when we gain muscle, we will 'gain weight' so to speak. Not fat, but weight. I guess I need to look at it that way--eventually, with cardio and strength training, the muscle will burn the fat...this article talked about...so that makes sense.
Thank you for talking me off the ledge, Michael.

I noticed this thread and was interested in knowing how you feel about the exercise and training in the program "The Biggest Loser'? ...doesn't it appear too stringent ?

I don't watch that show often--but I saw a rerun the other day, and it seems like they are starting off with too much--too soon...which doesn't seem realistic. Some of the people on that show have a considerable amount of weight to lose--and they start them out running up hill and stairs? I would imagine though that the contestants have to have a thorough medical examination before going on that show--otherwise, they would open themselves up to liability. The workouts look fun--some of them--it would be nice to have a physical trainer living with me!

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 2/17/08
Just wrapped up my workout--went 8 miles today on the bike--quasi spinning routine--30-35 minutes roughly. I then popped in my new pilates dvd--did the first set of ab/leg exercises--mainly stretches, and core work. My legs actually feel much better from the stretches. Maybe I didn't stretch enough after the BB dvd.
Have a blessed week, everyone.

WG, are you secretly training for the Iron-Mom contest . If you are down 2" sounds like you are on the right track and getting a max of 1500 calories/day. Keep up the good work.
Michael, 11miles, what a great way to start the week

haha--IronMOM--hee hee--that's cute.
IM...I can't imagine it. Not even a 1/2 IM! Last year my foot problem as you might recall--left me not able to do as much running (if any at times), etc as I'd like. I was in ok shape, but gained weight from not being able to do as much...even walking long distances like at the mall or whatever, were painful. Now that my foot has healed (praise God) I have an appetite to a)get the weight I gained last year off...and b) to gain back the stamina I lose pre-my foot problem. I will say--it would be nice to enter a race this year. If I get to my goals--we shall see. Anything is possible with God, right?
Hope you're doing well, TIME.

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 2/17/08
Met with a friend this morning and got in a 13.5 mile trail run. We were both tired and sore from other runs this weekend, so it was a sloooow 13.5 miles.
