Default Whats the best razor for a a girl just starting to shave her legs?

Okay, this is a spin off on the thread about young girls and shaving.

After reading through the post I decided that my daughter-who has always been hairy-needs to shave. When I asked her if she wanted to learn, she grew excited, so she must be ready.

But what is the best razor for an 11 year old girl? An electric one? Just a cheap one that comes in bulk?

Please don't tell me the choice is obvious. I wouldn't ask if I knew the answer to my question.

Electric might not to bad, so she won't cut herself... otherwise, just buy a disposable kind. They're way cheaper, and you can update to the newest kind that strikes your fancy much easier. Just let her pick out something that appeals to her. I don't think there is a 'better' razor (though I could be wrong). What really matters is how often you shave your legs... That's just my experience, anyways, in terms of how fast the hair grows back, etc.

Oh, my! There is a huge difference! Pay for quality, because it matters. I use a Venus along with a good women's shave gel. Disposables rip up my skin!

Also, just a tip.... I scrub with a loofa before I shave. It exfoliates and makes the hairs stand up so I get a closer, smoother shave.

I started at 12 BTW. Good luck!

Personally I like disposable, the blue Good News razors are my favorite (or really the store brand equivalent). I was going to say that for a girl just starting out an electric razor might make sense. Then I was thinking about it, and my daughter has always done just fine with a disposable razor. Just make sure she knows to shave in the shower, and not on dry legs.

I think I would start out with a good electric razor and see how it goes (a wet/dry one would be convenient). If she doesn't get a close enough shave then I'd go with regular razors..... but the replacement blades are soooo expensive!

It'll really depend on how much and what type of hair she has....

I'd still vote for waxing if it were me though

Those bic desposibles are horrible, they like take off the first layer of skin. I'd probable get my daughter a Venus or similar nice replacement head one. We'll be crossing that bridge soon.

My vote goes to Venus.

Yup, Venus. I don't buy anything else. It is expensive, but I just put it in perspective. Instead of buying my regular cup of coffee a day at my local coffee shop, I can buy Venus razor blades and dark roast coffee beans to grind and brew my own. It's a win-win situation: smooth, cut-free legs and better coffee.

I'd say Venus. I've used them since they came out, and won't change them unless something way better comes out.

Oh, and the electrical ones... nooooo... those HURT! I have a very expensive one and have only used it twice since it really hurts when it cuts the hair.

Oh, don't forget about a good shaving gel if you do get her a razor.

my 10 year old daughter asked me just the other day if she should shave her armpits or not. she kind of wants to but her aunt sarah (who is only about 3 years older than her) told her she should wait because sarah only started shaving like last year. I think G mostly wanted to complain about her aunt sarah.

around her birthday in may I'll get her her own razor. while my venus razor is nice, the intuition is so convenient. I haven't yet managed to cut myself with the intuition and it already has the shaving stuff right on it so I think it'd be perfect for a beginner. and if she's only using it to shave her armpits (she can wait until she's at least 12 to shave her legs) the blades should last her quite a while.

Thank you all. I have always used the cheap disposable type of razors and have never heard of the Venus. I will have to look into that.

Ok, I dug up that thread and chatted with my 10 year old this morning about it. We went to the grocers and I bought a Schick Quatro for her. It has the wires over the blades. I used to use one of those when I was younger and it's good. She shaved the underarms tonight. I couldn't believe how excited she was. She was trying to hide the absolute giddiness over it, but she's growing up and I'm trying my best not to fight it. Everything went well. I imagine that the legs will soon follow. Really soon.

When I was a teenager, I had really bad razor burn on my legs. A dermatologist said that I should never use disposable razors. The doctor also said that men's razors are better. I use a Gillette Mach3 Power or a Gillette Fusion Power. The blades are expensive, but I do not get cuts or razor burn. It is also best to make the shave the last part of the shower. By then, the hair is soft. A good shaving cream is essential too.

Today the men & women's Gillettes & Shicks are pretty much the same. The women's razors are just a little easier to hold and the Venus's handle is curved in a way that makes it easier to shave legs. It's basically a Mach III shaped for women.

Waxing involves pain, I can not see convincing my 12 year old of that. She's already not big on the whole shaving thing, and she's a big baby when to comes to discomfort.
