2008 gardening thread.
Instead of resurrecting an older thread, which I read is not encouraged by the mods, I'll go ahead and post one. From Apples through Zucchini. Flowers, herbs, trees, grass & plants that you can grow legally in the U.S (which includes tobacco and excludes wacky tobaccy) come here to talk and give advice.

Re: 2008 gardening thread.
Important note:
Fungus like protists & Algae(also a protist) are not plants and therefore discussion of these is prohibited in this thread. Also, I am well aware that Fungi were at one time considered plants but after further analysis they were giving their own kingdom and therefore discussion of Fungi is also prohibited. lol just kidding guys you all can mention them.

Re: 2008 gardening thread.
Mid-February I got all enthusiastic about gardening and bought two of those plastic greenhouse things and a package of beans and one of sweet peas. I figured they'd take a month before I had to deal with them.
They exploded. At the moment we have bean plants in cans and the cut bottoms of milk cartons, old crock pots and whatever else I could find on windowsills and in bright places all over the house. Some are in flower. The bathroom with a skylight is a jungle.
I threw out the tangled mass of the peas this morning, a casualty of the flu which got me for 2 weeks. A new packet and only six plants total under the greenhouse now will result in a manageable crop, as well as planting more in a couple of weeks and so on will assure a steady crop until the hot weather hits.
So I learned: don't plant a whole packet of peas inside unless you have room, including stakes!
We're looking forward to mint, basil, peppers, peas, beans, corn, tomatoes and strawberries this year, as well as whatever else we come up with. I only plant a few plants and play with them more than do serious gardening. But home-grown green beans beat canned ones all hollow.

Re: 2008 gardening thread.
My poor tulips have no idea what's going on with the weather, my irises are starting to pop up as well.
The wild chives have popped up all over, especially the driveway, but they smell so nice when I drive over them.
The sweetpeas in the yard have to be tamed. I thought they were annuals, but they seem to have taken over a very large corner of the yard, can't wait until they start blooming.

Re: 2008 gardening thread.
Living in Arizona, we are already well into gardening season! I live in an apartment, so I can't have a ton, but I'm trying this year. I have a pot with strawberries and they are doing quite well, blooming and I can see the tiny little green berries on them. I have a pot with roma tomatoes and they are starting to flower. Anybody know if I will need to get something to stake them? Or when? I also have a rosemary bush and a couple of flowers. So far I haven't killed anything which I figure is good!

Re: 2008 gardening thread.
I am looking for a source to order the green/lime green spider mum. I saw them in an arrangement @ a wedding. I have looked on line and found out that green in the garden is very stylish! Green coneflowers are available but can not find spider mums. They are available for flower arrrangements from florists but no luck with mail order nursery.
