wearing hats in the church
Back in my country, you would not dare to wear any hat inside a church.
I could see that some ladies wearing nice hat inside the church, but some wear hats ....that look like they are going to the beach.
What is the significant of wearing hat inside the church in Western culture?
Thanks!

Before the 70's, women wore veils in church. This is in response to St. Paul's instructions that women should cover their heads in church. I have been told that it was also common- at least in some areas- for women to wear hats. In the movie Going My Way, (made in the 1940's), you see all of the women wearing hats in church.

Re: wearing hats in the church
Thank you, m134e5, for explaining. Sometimes, I see that people wear cap inside the church and those hats for the beach. It doesn't seem to be appropirate.

Re: wearing hats in the church
In a church, a hat on a woman is appropriate. A hat on a man is very inappropriate.

**Before the 70's, women wore veils in church.**
Up until the mid 60's generally women wore a hat when the got dressed up and left the house.
Even my grandmother's friends who came over to play cards with her wore hats for the party.

And gloves, too. I remember going downtown just to go shopping, and wearing my hat and white gloves. Now I am showing my age!
