Exercise support thread--week of 5/25/08
Welcome, everyone, to a new thread for a new week. It's time to set goals for how we will honor God by taking care of the Temple of the Holy Spirit. I'm taking today off, as I'm enjoying a much needed rest. However, my goals will be the same as last week: run 26 miles, including an 11 mile long run, which I plan to do tomorrow.

My schedule for this week is a bit different, which I think will actually help me.
Sun - Bike
Mon - Run
Tue - Bike
Wed - Run
Thu - Walk
Fri - Rest
Sat - Run or Bike (depends on what the hotel gym has)

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 5/25/08
Been thinking about the headaches along with exercise & I've got a couple of questions for our big runners:
1) How much water do you drink in a day?
2) How many calories do you eat in a day?
I typically drink 3/4 - 1 gallon a day. I have also been trying to hold to 2,400. But I'm wondering, if I'm spending 1-2 hrs doing cardio & consistently burning more than 1,000 calories each time, do I need to increase my water & food intake some?

I am bad for forgetting to drink...i have gone all day, and it is past supper time and i wonder why i am parched! I am not a drinker of water, water sucks, water really sucks where i live. However, i buy 5 galon bottles of the water that is boiled, filtered deozinated etc...I believe Dasani is the only water out i will buy or drink. I can not stand the taste of minerals, sulphers and such in the water here in the country.
I will however drink huge teas at my ready. XL steeped tea, but i take it wickedly evil...2 milk, and 4 sugars. 1-2 a day since i started dieting. No candy, no chips, no take out...but my tea stayed the same, and i still lost.
I would be worried about the amount you remove through excercising, as it depletes a lot from your reserves.
I am not the one to ask this, but to burn over a thousand calories, leaving you at a consumption total of 1500...well i have seen women do this amount...this is why i question the amounts.
How about you consider the adding fruits and veggies between what you are doing, as they burn fat, and replenish vitamins.
4-5 pieces of fruit as you wander about in the day would be an excellent idea. one between every meal, and if nescesary before bed. Baring nothing else, i have lost 10-15 lbs a month doing this only....oh, i increased my water as well when doing this. From nothing to something...

If I am not running, then it is around 70-80 oz (~2 quarts/liters). If I am running then that number is much higher. Yesterday I was out running for 6 hours in very cold (and rainy) weather and drank ~200 oz (6 quarts/liters) during the run and through the rest of the day. If it is a long run in hot weather, then you can double or triple that number. On a two hour run I can drink 1.5 – 2 liters, depending on temperature.

A lot. I do not count, but right now it is around 3000-4000 a day. More today because I seem to be constantly hungry. That said, I am just maintaining my weight right now and not trying to increase or decrease

A fairly easy way to determine if you need to drink more water during exercise is to weight yourself before and after working out. If you drank enough, then your weight should be the same. It could be electrolyte issues though if you are drinking straight water. I always carry salt pills with me on runs and some sort of electrolyte/amino acid/fat replacement drink mix. Oh, and gels, food, tape, cash, i.d., camera, warm clothes/jacket, flashlight and other random things (never know when a run might go longer than planned )

And in the spirit of the thread, I ran 80 miles last week, which was nice. I think all the runs but the short one were really great. This week I plan another 80-90 miles.

Nice! How long was your "short" run?

Well & I drink strictly water, so I'm wondering if I need more electrolytes. I started drinking a bottle of Gatorade a day this week to see if that will help.

Good idea. Maybe I'll just add a couple hundred calories of fruit/veggies on the days I do long cardio workouts.

Thanks for the info! Based on what you've said it looks like I need to increase both liquid & food consumption on the days I do long cardio workouts.

Re: Exercise support thread--week of 5/25/08
I'm just a posting machine tonight.
I missed my scheduled workout today. I feel asleep in the afternoon & ended up sleeping for almost 5 hrs!!! Apparently I was so deep asleep I even missed the phone ringing, and it sits right behind my head on the headboard of my bed...

Nice job! That's a lot of kicks on each leg.

Just finished 1 hr & 40 min on the treadmill. Went just under 8 miles total & burned 1,400 calories.
