Re: Cake or Pie?
I cannot bake a decent cake, even from a mix, to save my life, but for some reason I have a good hand for pastry and piecrust. However, can't eat either so have not baked for years. When there is a choice of desserts which I can sample or taste, I go for the fruit pie, esp. one not commonly seen, like strawberry rhubarb or black raspberry. (Am salivating at the thought of Hartville Kitchens in Ohio or Zehnders in Frankenmuth, Michigan).

Re: Cake or Pie?
It's like asking which of my children I love the most - I can't choose between 'em

Re: Cake or Pie?
I found the most amazing pie crust in an apple pie recipe. I make it every 2 months or so and crave it in between.
Let me hunt it up and I'll post it.
It's extra work to prepare but oh.so.yummy. And I don't like regular pie crust at all.

Re: Cake or Pie?
Alrighty:
on allrecipes it's called Mum's Irish Apple Pie. I use my own apple filling recipe, but here's the double crust:
INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup cake flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon white sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/8 teaspoon lemon juice
350 for 45 mins.
I want an old-fashioned pie safe. And then fill it up with pies. Pretty much then my life would be complete.

Re: Cake or Pie?
Pie! It is not even close. I have never met a pie I didn't love (well, maybe shoo fly pie). My favorites are pumpkin, custard and deep dish apple. I can tolerate cake but I can't think of time when I was tempted for a second slice.

A cup of butter and sour cream and lemon juice as well? Sound really good

Any good cake with frosting (although my dad tells me that I make his mom's spice cake even better than she did [ ]).
As for pies, I'd prefer cherry, lemon meringue, coconut cream, and banana cream (although if there are any good ones with apricot and peach, we can talk).

Yeah, I tend to go for the uniced cake too, except for chocolate cake which really needs icing. I love madeira cake, which is a sponge flavoured with a bit of *hic* alkymahol, doesn't matter whether it's iced or uniced

Re: Cake or Pie?
Neither--I'm the lady who bakes scones.
Delicious, mouth-watering, absolutely the best you have ever tasted scones.
Blueberry almond, cranberry crunch, apple cinnamon, strawberry lemon balm, cherry cream. . . I love to try new combinations if you have any ideas!
From scratch with King Arthur flour, Vermont organic butter and buttermilk, fresh from the garden herbs and spices.
(I am so glad my home to be in Virginia carries K.A. flour at the cooperative as well as good farm fresh milk etc.)
Cake is fine for birthdays and pie for breakfast . . .but nothing beats scones, any day!
