Default Closing a post

I recently started a thread and because the dicussion got way off topic and some people stated things which I viewed as attacks, I wish to close the post. How does that happen if the OP wishes to close a post?

Check to see who the moderator is of that forum (it should be in the sticky area). PM them with the thread link and ask them to close it. If they do not allow stickies, use the report abuse button on the first post and ask it to be closed.

I have done both in the past

Was that the thread on "Why am I Catholic"? Because if it was...thank you. I am a new convert and I went to that thread seeking support and guidance and what I read broke my heart.
