Default Seeking Catholic Bible Commentary

Good afternoon,
I want to buy a bible commentary, not an RSV one because I do not like the language that is used. We English are proud of our language and have difficulty when it gets downgraded into a kind of street patois. I would prefer one that links to the Jerusalem Bible if possible because that is the source that I use. If anyone could recommend any titles then I would be very happy to receive them.

Yours in Christ and St. Benedict.

Paul

Here are some translations. I am not sure exactly what you want, whether an English translation or a Bible commentary, or a study Bible.

Here is my home page, you can search for options here. http://litteralchristianlibrary.wetpaint.com/

Thank you for your post.

You might like to consider:

I consider the NAB the most accurate translation of the NT.

I have a computer copy I got with the Collegeville Catholic Reference Library (2 CDs).

Well, unfortunately, two of the best study Bibles, the Navarre and the Ignatius Study Bible, utilize the RSV or RSV-2nd ed. You could check out the Douay-Rheims Version with Haydock Commentary (not all versions have the commentary). It was written by a priest in the 1800s and heavily references what the Early Church Fathers said about various passages.

Compared to many, the Collegeville series is found seriously lacking.

Go for Navarre or even the Haydock/Douay.

Or get the Early Fathers on CD and see what a number of them say about Scriptures.

IMHO, don't put your last dollar on the Jerusalem either. Spend a few extra bucks on a Catholic Parallel Bible. Not a lot of commentary, but interesting to see how and where translations differ.

Might want to check this out. It includes the haydock commentary, antenicene or prenicene church fathers commentary, NT A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, and St Thomas Catena--church fathers commentary on the Gospels.

The following may be helpful for seminary students, religious professor- teachers, any Catholic students taking religious education classes, and also may be of use in helping priests prepare sermons for Gospels readings of the day using Catholic commentaries, and church Fathers quotes, religious Education Directors and CCD Teachers, and of course it may be useful for any Catholic in learning more about their faith, Scripture etc..... Please be sure to pass this along.

enclosed is link for a free Catholic Bible and Catechetical study/resource Sofware program which can be downloaded--- with lots of Catholic modules for Dictionaries, commentaries, Bibles, and topical see below

A great Catholic software Bible Study Program and best of all its free for download and nothing out there compares to this, its also going to get better.

From: http://www.esnips.com/web/CatholicApolegetics
What we have here at this web site a synopsis:

These are all eSword modules-Bibles, Commentaries, Dictionaries, and Topical all for the eSword base Bible software program.. All to help Catholics and those interested in knowing more or understanding what the Catholic Church truly teaches and why. All modules are free as well as the Base esword program for download. The Base progam is a free download at:
http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html .

e-Sword is a fast and effective way to study the Bible.
e-Sword is feature rich and user friendly with more capabilities than you would expect in a free software package. The fact that e-Sword is free is just one of the blessings and does not speak of the quality of the software. I make my living writing software and I believe I have put forth my best effort in this endeavor. The real work, however, was put in by the godly men and women who devoted countless years creating the texts that have been made available for our benefit. (From the e-sword Web site Rick Myers)

The Program has the ability to accept user created modules hence a substantial number of user Catholic modules including the Early Teachings of the Church in the first few centuries (a must read), Haydock Commentary, St Thomas works in the Catena commentary on Gospels by early church fathers, and his Summa Theologica, a number of Catholic Bibles, Catechism, 1909 Catholic encyclopedia another must, a Catholic Doctrinal Concordance, and a number of special tools for studying the Bible With Greek and Latin tools for studying the basic Greek Grammer and Latin language to enhance one's understanding of definitions etc. This has become a consolidation of free modules for e-Sword base progam, modules scattered across ensips web, and a few other websites on the internet all to make for easier download and finding of Catholic modules and good study tools. Michael Jacques.

Hoping to add some good Catholic commentary and dictionaries which would be great editions at a $ Cost.

Thak you so much for brilliant suggestions.

I have not downloaded yet the programs you suggest, as I only saw your post a few moments ago.

However they seem wonderful.

I use Logos (Libronix Digital Liibrary System) and Bible Works.

How do your suggestions complement these?

Your Libronix and Bible Works will not give the Catholic Commentaries, instead they will give things which contradict Catholic Church teachings. Other resources such as tools for Latin, Greek and Hebrew and tense voice mood-grammer are more neutral and can be used to help Catholics study faithfuly either way.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply to me.

In BibleWorks I have the Vulgate, the Douay-Rheims, New American and New Jerusalem Bibles.

While in Logos I have the Catholic Reference Library, which includes The Collegeville Bible Commentary, The New Dictionary of Catholic Spirituality and many other Catholic texts.

Thus I have Catholic resources as well as general Biblical works.

A new module for esword under dictionary has been loaded for all who may be interested.

catholic prayer.zip
Esword Dictionary of Catholic Prayers. This contains prayers for most every occasion, devotional prayers, portion of the Divine Office, ecumenical prayers such as the prayer of St Francis of Assisi--explains the absolute necessity of prayer
http://www.esnips.com/web/CatholicApolegetics

St Francis Prayer:
Lord, make me an instrument
of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying
that we are born to eternal life. Amen

Sorry, but I am a bit lost.

I would like to have Catholic resources on my computer.

I downloaded the eSword base program. Then I looked at eSnips.

I decided to get 1 Early Teachings of Church. I tried to download this, but I could not open it. As I was told my computer did not know what program created it.

I would appreciate help, as the resources you mention seem excellent, since I am very interested in the early Church (St Paul and the Apostolic Fathers).

Thanks for your interest

Did you down load the directions??
If you downloaded the esword base program, I presume you have installed the program? When installed it will create a folder E-sword folder under the program files.

All files which are zipped must be unzipped and extracted to the esword folder under program files folder. the early church fathers is not zipped so put it in the esword folder. start the esword program. You will notice that Bibles are at the top, dictionaries on the bottom of the window, and commentaries and topical is loaded on the left side of the windown. you will need to open up the topic soft key and and select the early church fathers their.

There is one thing I am not sure of because they recently updated and few changes have occured in the new esword base program. I have heard some people saying that the topic files are loaded and read from a file other than the esword folder under program files folder. Let me know if you once you place the early church fathers in the esword folder and it is not showing under the topic soft key from the opened esword program... download the directions there are some pictures and pointers as far as being able to tell where esword reads all of its files from. Let me know if this helps. Topic files do not open except through the esword program.

Thank you for your reply.

Yesterday I spent time on e-Sword and I have made some progress.

As well as the base program I have managed to download some other bibles.

My problem is now more focused, trying to download eSnips.

I have just received your post. So now I hope to resolve my final difficulties.

Once again, thank you for all your interest.

any one interested
A New e-Sword Module has been uploaded to :http://www.esnips.com/web/CatholicApolegetics

David Gaither has agreed to try to create a top esword module for the nicene and post nicene church fathers many thanks to him, with that and as soon as I finish the below dictionary module for A Catholic Commentary on Scripture I will start on "The Great Corneilius Lapide (Catholic ) Commentary"

I have finished earlier than I thought with many hours devoted to completing the commentary section for:

"A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture"
A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture (1951) esword mod.zip
Esword module commentary--Ιncludes OT, NT and Deuterocanonical Books commentary on the Bible. Result of nine years' work (1940s) by a group of scholars, who believe that biblical learning must be integrated with traditional Christianity if it is to bear any spiritual fruit. object of the Commentary is to open to the reader the true sense, the doctrinal importance and, as far as may be, the spiritual value and marvellous beauty of the Word of God.
This is now available for download at http://www.esnips.com/web/CatholicApolegetics

I still must create a dictionary module for "A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture"
I am guessing about 1 up to 2 months for completion
