St. Wenceslaus, King and Martyr ( Feastday 28 September )
He ruled his kingdom rather by kindness than authority. He succoured orphans, widows, and all the poor with the greatest charity, sometimes even carrying wood on his shoulders, by night, to those in need of it. He frequently assisted at the funerals of poor persons, liberated captives, and often visited the prisoners during the night, assisting them with gifts and advice. It caused great sorrow to his tender heart to condemn even the guilty to death. He had the greatest reverence for priests; and with his own hands he would prepare the wine to be used in the sacrifice of the Mass.

St. GhislainFeastday: October 9

He was a Frank who became a hermit in Hainault and was founding abbot of a monastery there called The Cell (now St. Ghislain) near Mons. He encouraged St. Waldetrudis to found a convent at Castrilocus (Mons) and St. Aldegundus to found a convent at Mauberge. An apophrycal legend has him a native of Attica who became bishop of Athens, resign his See, went to Rome and was sent to Hainault, where he became a hermit.

St. Joannicus
Feastday: November 4
846

Hermit, prophet, and miracle worker who defied the Byzantine emperor Theophilus and his Iconoclast policies. Born in Bithynia, in modem Turkey, Joannicus was an Iconoclast until he was converted to the religious life at the age of forty. He became a recluse on Mount Olympus in Bithynia and a monk. Later, he defied the emperor and declared that sacred images would be restored to the Church. Empress Theodora did restore the icons.
