Exercise Support Thread Week of 12/14/2008
Greetings, friends. It's the 3rd week of Advent. That means we can rejoice as we work out this week. It also means it's time to set goals. Today I start my running routine back up again, so I plan to run 23 miles, including an 8 mile long run, this morning, despite the fact that it's 37 degrees outside right now.

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 12/14/2008
I'm back
Got a query from Michael while I was 'back home' because I had been missing, so to explain. . .
Most of October and November were written off to a lingering bout of flu which turned into bronchitis. Exercise contra indicated in these circurmstances
Just as I was over the worst and looking at resuming my swimming, I got worrying news about my DD's health. She's the other side of the world to me at the moment, but I had 12 days leave coming up two weeks after getting this news, so I flew home on 2 December.
Good news is that DD's health issue is a minor problem which is easily treated.
While I was away not too much was done exercise-wise . . . except carrying an 8kg (17,6lbs) baby GD up 35 stairs at least twice a day . . . I did get some swimming in before I left here . . . and some while I was home.
Enough with the excuses . . . I do need some time to catch up on sleep, as my return flight got me back 7 hours before I was due to start work yesterday.
My goal is to swim for 30 minutes three times this week.

wowzer - it's mid 50's here. Balmy for us.
Hey why are you increasing your routine again? Do you have a few more big races you are training for? Or is it the start of cookie season?

8 miles every Sunday is my normal "maintenance" long run. I'll increase that as I prepare for my next race, which will be a half marathon next June.

14 miles done so far this week. 9 to go.
Gwyn, how do you walk in -14 degree weather? I'd be a frozen Popsicle.

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 12/14/2008
Trying something new. I want to focus a bit more on running and mix the eliptical in and using it it in the winter when I can't run. Problem is time. I really feel the need to do some sort of upper body routine.
I just bought the iron gym bar. Basically for push ups & pull ups. I am thinking I can put together a rotuine of push ups, pull ups, squats & sit ups and get it done in 10-15 min instaed of 25-30 min(with dumbells) leaving me a bit more time for running and eliptical.

Frank, I like your plan. I, too, feel the need to mix it up a bit. I have an elliptical, but it's not at my house. I need to get it moved, so I can start using that, alternating with running.

In the past few months, I have been spending equal amounts of time on strength training. I really like it - though it makes it very tough to get my miles done that I need for my goals. But it has made a significant change in muscle and body shape.
So far this week - I have been pretty good, though my chocolate intake has surpassed my caloric burn. Got a superb box of chocolates delivered to the office. man - oh - man.
Got to double up on my aerobic workouts this week to balance out but so worth it!

Jenn, if those chocolates are giving you a hard time, send them to me, and I'll protect you from them. That's what friends are for.

If you're up for taking people's stuff so they don't eat it I've got a SERIOUS load for you. Would you mind taking all of the food in my house?? I have been consuming as much of it as possible lately. And could you also take my credit and debit cards with it so I can't buy food either?
I'm definitely failing MISERABLY at this whole exercise & weight management thing. And it seems like no matter how many times I tell myself tomorrow is a new day, I still do the same things all over again. At the rate I'm going I am going to end up back at my original weight (or worse) by the end of this year.
