Enigma Machine Simulator thread

Have fun with a simulator of the world's most (in)famous encoding machine. The Enigma was originally invented in Germany in the early 1920's for commercial use as a means to prevent industrial espionage, but was soon adopted for secret government and military communication by the Nazi government. Many Americans died trying to get their hands on one of these.

First, go to this page: http://users.telenet.be/d.rijmenants/en/enigmasim.htm

When it is set up, adjust the three rotors at the top to A-B-C (don't connect any plugs at the bottom).

Type the letters shown below into the keyboard, one by one, and write on a piece of paper the letters that light up.

Now, try this one. On the front panel of your Enigma, click on the right-hand thumbscrew, just over the "U" light. This will open the panel to reveal the rotors. To the left of the three rotors is another cylinder with a letter on it, probably "B." This cylinder is called the reflector. Clicking on the reflector changes the model of Enigma you're simulating. Click on it until the label reads "Kriegsmarine M4 - UKW=B." You are now using one of the Naval models. Next, go to the bottom of the cabinet to the spare rotor storage area and click on the rotor marked "gamma." It will move up and turn sideways for fine-tuning. Leave it at "A-01," then go back up to the rotors and click on the blank space between the left-side rotor and the reflector. The gamma rotor will then go into this space. Click on each of the other three rotors already in place to make sure that they are also set to "A-01." In the upper left corner of the case is an oblong silver knob: click this to close the housing. You now have four rotors. Set them to A-B-C-D and type this message:

In this case, the spaces are the same length as the encoded word, not the traditional five-letter blocks.
