Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
Happy New Week!
Welcome, everyone, to a new week of maintenance on the Temple of the Holy Spirit. It's time to set our goals for the week. My goal is to run 23 miles, including a long run of 8 miles, which I will do today.
Who's next?

OK fine...but please do not blow away!
I do not know what is worse...running with the wind, or against it.
Do you have a preference? I say against on the way out, and with on the way back.
hehe

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
I'm back. I onlyhad to drive 10 miles to find a good place. I went to our local community college, and ran on their track. The air was calm. It's a nice track, with a rubberized surface. It makes a difference when the entire 8 mile route is flat. I did my best time ever for 8 mile: 1:08:30.
Lana, since I can't run against the winds, at least not the winds we get, I'd have to say that running with the wind is better, but it can be dangerous, as a gust could easily knock me down. I once tried running uphill, against the wind, and found myself running in place. I was running hard, but not moving.

8 in 1:08:30 is great! Congratulations!
Those school tracks are nice.
My goal is to run another 30 miles this week but I need to adjust my ab routine. I'm not feeling it anymore. This week I'll be experimenting in that area and spending more time with free weights on my arms.
My appetite for food is increasing so I need to rethink what I'm putting in my body.

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
I thought the readings today were especially fitting for our thread here. I power walked about 4 miles over the past two days...my goal this week, is to begin running again. I plan to do about 8 miles, and see where I end up. Wish me luck-I might need it. Wow, it's been way too long since I've run.
Have a productive week, all!

I broke down and purchased Fit For Eternal Life - that book SimonX suggested we read.
When it comes in I'll share some snippets.
Tonight I went into overdrive to do my five and I learned a kickboxing move that really put pain in my thigh and buttocks.

I wish you more than luck! I pray for your success.
It feels good to run again. My face is already looking a bit like a runner's face.
I'm not sure why my face and neck change in such a unique way.
Do you really want it?
Go, go, go, ole' ole' ole'
Go, go, go, hear we go, yeah
Push – ups for life, this is the one.
Now is the time, don’t ever stop
Push it along, try to be strong.
Push it along, right to the top.
I'm trying psuedo one arm push ups. ouch

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
Happy Monday,
My goal is to exercise every day, increasing the distance that I walk on the treadmill each day. I had an injury last spring and I am just now building up my distance with even walking!

Welcome Fitz! A slow start and building is always good. I had my fair share of minor ( nothing big ) injuries to knees and feet to know.
It is nice to see this virtual gym getting filled up.
This is my 1/2 way brief break before heading back to finish up my goal for the day.
Bad news: My treadmill is making warning sounds I can't ignore. I'm trying to figure out how old it is.

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
How do you like these adjectives and verbs of inspiration from the Prologue of the Rule of St. Benedict?
Listen, O my son, to the precepts of thy master, and incline the ear of thy heart, and cheerfully receive and faithfully execute the admonitions of thy loving Father, that by the toil of obedience thou mayest return to Him from whom by the sloth of disobedience thou hast gone away.
To thee, therefore, my speech is now directed, who, giving up thine own will, takest up the strong and most excellent arms of obedience, to do battle for Christ the Lord, the true King.
Let us then rise at length, since the Scripture arouseth us, saying: "It is now the hour for us to rise from sleep" (Rom 13:11)
Let us then rise at length, since the Scripture arouseth us, saying: "It is now the hour for us to rise from sleep" (Rom 13:11)
"Run whilst you have the light of life, that the darkness of death overtake you not" (Jn 12:35).
And the Lord seeking His workman in the multitude of the people, to whom He proclaimeth these words, saith again: "Who is the man that desireth life and loveth to see good days" (Ps 33[34]:13)?
If we desire to dwell in the tabernacle of His kingdom, we cannot reach it in any way, unless we run thither by good works.
Therefore, having our loins girt with faith and the performance of good works, let us walk His ways under the guidance of the Gospel, that we may be found worthy of seeing Him who hath called us to His kingdom (cf 1 Thes 2:12).
Our hearts and our bodies must, therefore, be ready to do battle under the biddings of holy obedience; and let us ask the Lord that He supply by the help of His grace what is impossible to us by nature. And if, flying from the pains of hell, we desire to reach life everlasting, then, while there is yet time, and we are still in the flesh, and are able during the present life to fulfil all these things, we must make haste to do now what will profit us forever.
But as we advance in the religious life and faith, we shall run the way of God's commandments with expanded hearts and unspeakable sweetness of love; so that never departing from His guidance and persevering in the monastery in His doctrine till death, we may by patience share in the sufferings of Christ, and be found worthy to be coheirs with Him of His kingdom.

Hi Beautiful!
Thank you for your words of encouragement. You know what also changes when I was running a lot? My arms! It's like, I don't need to do weight lifting...when I run...it's like my arms become just as fit as my legs...that has always fascinated me, how that works. I am looking forward to getting started today.
Have a great day!

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
No exercise today--cleaned closets though. I'd rather run 5 miles in 90 degree weather than clean closets.
Hope everyone did something today to inch towards your goals.

Re: Exercise Support Thread Week of 1/18/2009
lol I didn't clean any closets but I did vacuum the bowels of my treadmill - yuck - things get funky in there. Now I know what was making that strange sound.

This is true for speed walkers too. Try speed walking and punching your arms out in front of you. It looks a little strange but who cares. It is quite the workout.
I'm really surprised that I can easily do 100 full crunches a day. I'd like to try 200 a day plus my new rope climbers. To work the lower abs I climb the rope closer to between my knees.
