I went into the box on Saturday evening. It felt really good.

But today is a not-so-good day, and I am thinking I should just live in the box for the rest of Lent.

I am out in Portland, Or. I grew up in New Orleans, know exactly where and how to behave in New Orleans. Lived in Chicago for two years, been robbed on the altar of the cathedral in Baton Rouge and today was the first day in my entire adult life that I was actually scared. We were told that a cab from the airport was $45 and that there were no airport shuttles available. We were told to take the new "ultra-super-duper" light rail to downtown for $2. I have never seen so many homeless people in all my life. The trains were totally automatic and there wasn't a human being supervisor in sight. Everyone is wearing trench coats with hoods and backsacks. They get on at the stations, scope out the crowd, grin, and get back off.

Graffitti everywhere. Trash everywhere. The directions to get to the hotel downtown were wrong and I ended up walking over six blocks dragging my suitcase with the state's laptop draped overmy shoulder. I could walk the
French Quarter and not get hit up for money as much as I did this afternoon. They have the overpasses barred with iron gates and yet there are people in sleeping bags in every nook and cranny along the rail line.

There are other things I saw and I can't believe that virtually everyone is puffing away on cigs. This is what progressives want? I'll stay in the south. I thought San Francisco was bad..............this makes SF look like elementary school.

And the sun comes out and the sun goes in and it rains and then the sun comes out and then you get snow and sleet hitting your hotel window.

Personally, I'd rather have a nice Teapot, at least untill Lent is over (Hot Chocolate then).
