Default Why do we stand when the Gospel is read?

My niece has become a Bible only Christian. She is telling me that her confusion with the Catholic church began when she did not understand why we stand when the Gospel is read. She is telling me that we can't give more weight to the Gospels that all the Bible is equally authoritative. What do we Catholics have to say about this?

Hi,

We stand for the Gospel for the same reason we stand when we sing the national anthem or pledge allegiance to the flag: out of respect. All of the Bible is the sacred word of God, but not all of the Bible is equally important. The Gospel is the Good News of the redemption for which most of the Bible is a preparation.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
