Default Just expressing excitement

To see this group! I became a vegetarian about four years ago, about a year after becoming Catholic. I did so because I was persuaded that factory farming was inconsistent with God's plan for creation. I encounter nothing but opposition and hostility, even from Catholics. People seem to think they have a God-given right to mistreat animals, and I simply don't understand this.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and am glad to know there are other Catholics who have come to the same conclusion I have.

There are 60 of us here in this group now - isn't it a great blessing to know others have put 2 and 2 together and come to the conclusion that our food choice should reflect our faith!

Wishing all of you every blessing this weekend when we celebrate freedom - the freedom to live our faith each day

Hi Barbara and Welcome!!!

First congratulations on that tremendous weight loss, what an accomplishment!

Some good places to start for the low cost / and what the meat and potato eater will eat -

Can you get textured vegetable protein (TVP)? - sometimes this is just a dry item / some people get it frozen, or even seasoned already.

But TVP is a great place to start - it is very low cost and you can make not-meat loafs, chili, spaghetti sauce, some of the things you may already be making.

Let us know what kind of food you are used to cooking for your hubby and we can help you come up with good and good tasting alternatives. And a vegetarian / vegan choice is usually cheaper -- take a look on www.veganessentials.com for an on-line store -

Feel free to post any need for a specific recipe in the recipe thread, or here, or just on the wall!

Again, WELCOME

While my veganism is largely a result of health-mindedness, I think it is consistent, if not the most consistent, with Catholic tradition and theology. Of course we know of the greatest example of how to lead a compassionate, respect for all God's creatures, Christ-like life in St. Francis of Assisi.

In certain Catholic works, such as "Creation Rediscovered", by Gerard Keane (TAN Books, 2009), it talks about how in the state of Original Justice (God's perfectly-ordered creation before the Fall of Man) there was no predatory behavior nor bloodshed. Man was a vegan (Keane uses the term "vegetarian" here), as were all other animals. Only after the Fall of Man did we see the emergence of predatory behavior, bloodshed, animals consuming other animals.
