Default Why don't most Protestants make the Sign of the Cross?

So why do most Protestants not make the Sign of the Cross when they pray? I dont understand that, it doesnt feel like a prayer unless I do. Why do they not?

It could be that after the Reformation, Protestants tried to do away with as much of the things Catholic, and the Sign of the Cross was one of them.

Cool Re: Why don't most Protestants make the Sign of the Cross?

It seems that Protestants have ''issues'' with the Cross/Crucifix. lt appears they believe that since Christ has risen, the cross/crucifix/sign of the cross is outdated and hence there is no need for any references to it.
Methinks....

Lutherans, Episcopalians, and Russian Baptists DO make the Sign of the Cross.

I would agree, its more evangelicals and fundamentalist that don't make the sign of the cross.

Speaking of the sign of the cross, it came up in a recent Catholic Answers show and I'm curious:

Do Catholics in the US do the smaller sign of the cross during Mass? (The one where you do a small cross over your forehead, then the mouth, and finally the heart). It's common here in Mexico but the show gave me the impression it's not the case in the US.

I'm also curious to know of those Christians who don't the sign and if there's a particular reason for it.

Yes Catholics in the US do the smaller signs of the cross. At least in all the churches I have been to. Could be some that don't, not sure.

My family, being of Spanish-Mexican origin lived in San Antonio. So I got it from my mother as she did this but lives in the States her whole life. So I've grown up with this practice and am surprised to read that it's not usual in the U.S. but then, I haven't been to every single parish so I can't compare.

I've seen a few in my current parish do this, but not many. There could be more, I don't know as I'm usually not paying attention to my neighbor. I do this when the gospel is about to be read.

I think it was Jimmy Swaggart who claimed it was the sign of Tammuz, a Babylonian god. He extracted this from Hislop's Two Babylons.
Many still believe it.

When I was converting, I found out that you did the cross on the forehead, lips, and heart with the prayer: "May Your word always be on my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart." We are military and have seen it everywhere that we go when they read the gospel. We have lived on both coasts and north and south. Also, saw this stationed in Italy.

1) Catholics do it.

2) It is not explicitly "in the Bible."

3) It is ritualistic.

4) It is a "sacramental."

Because we Catholics do!

Nobody's stopping them.

I know a lot of Anglicans who do, but I think it's simply not in many protestants churches traditions. Perhaps some would find it a little to "showy" for public use (I am aware of this myself - I don't want the sign of the cross ever to seem like I am saying "look at me I'm praying".
