This is a pretty quiet group. Anyone want to discuss a book? RobertRN, I didn't respond to your last post because I thought you might have some more to say about Manalive. I'm reading through The Man Who Knew Too Much right now.

No, I couldn't think of anything else to say. Yes, this is a quiet group. I haven't read The Man Who Knew Too Much, but I have read The Napoleon of Notting Hill and The Man Who Was Thursday (years ago). I'm currently reading (for the fourth or fifth time) The Everlasting Man, probably my favorite Chesterton book.

I finished The Man Who Knew Too Much. At first I thought the main character, Horne Fisher would show up in other books by Chesterton as he seemed to be a "serial" type character. Well he did show up in other stories, all in the same book. I won't give the last couple stories away. But GK has done the unique and surprising once again! Gotta love him.

Hi all! I haven't posted much here because I've been working on a screenplay between other duties. I've got my first draft done, so I'm taking a bit of a break, which gives me some time to look in on the Inklings.

Another great website for GKC's writings is: G K Chesterton's Works on the Web. I often post links to the various texts of GKC's works in threads on CAF. Nothing like getting Chesterton free, is there?

I've tried reading the Napoleon of Notting Hill, but it haven't been able to warm to it. I've read The Man Who Was Thursday and some of his other short stories, etc. But, I re-read The Father Brown Mysteries again and again. Loved Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man.

I only wish I'd read him before Lewis. Then again, GKC may have spoiled me too much to appreciate him. And Lewis' writings were introduced to me at just the right time in my life, so it's all good, as they say.

Hi Della,
Thanks for the link. Real nice having it free. Have you ever gone to a public library and looked for Chesterton's work? Where I have been, almost nothing. So disappointing, but in line with academia's ignoring of him.

The public library where I live has some of his works. As a matter of fact, the first Chesterton book I ever read (The Everlasting Man) I had checked out fron the library. I later checked out The Man Who Was Thursday, Napoleon of Notting Hill, and one of the Fr. Brown mysteries.

I haven't been to our local library in many years, so I don't know what they have of his writings. Various colleges and universities have collections of his work, though. Although, I'm not sure they are accessible to the general public.

The American Chesterton Society works to promote him. If you haven't heard of them you might want to check them out.

Glad to hear that you found him in a public library.
Yes, I've spent quite a bit of time on the website. I subscribed to Gilbert for a year while I was able.

Love them! Read them again and again! Br. Brown taught me how to see moral questions from the Catholic perspective, which was wonderful for me as a then recent convert to the Church. Some of the stories were made into films. There's a thread in this forum about those.

The films? I have a vague recall of seeing some promos for them...

Yes. The BBC did a series of FB stories that are available on DVD (although they may not play in sync on some USA DVD players) and Alec Guinness played him in a British film called "The Detective" (odd name--don't know why they called it that, but it's pretty good). The Guinness film is a compilation and reworking of a couple of the original stories.
