Default About how old was Mary when Jesus was born?

I know this is impossible to answer exactly, but based on the marriage customs of the day and area, customs which I know little about, can you estimate within a close range? I've been wondering this for a while.
Thanks!

Most Bible scholars, Catholic and Protestant, believe she was probably 14 to 16 years old, based on the Jewish marriage customs of the time.

Generally puberty was later then due to diet, however a year or two past puberty was probably the most common time to marry off girls.

About 14 seems to be the consensus of opinion so the poor lass could have been pregnant at 13 ( or younger ), still a child herself and, given that pregnancy outside marriage could be punished by stoning to death ( the female being considered the 'guilty party' ) not a good thing to happen to a young girl

I always thought about fifteen or sixteen.

I think 12-15 is right.

I was reminded of it when we went to a maternity home to adopt our daughters. The sight of 12-15 year old expectant mothers playing like school girls at recess was a troubling sight.

It should be remembered, however, that in ancient times -- and even up until about the beginning of the last century -- children/young people were treated as adults and started taking on adult responsibilities at a younger age than they do today. Partly because life expectancy was a lot shorter (45 or 50 would have been old age, not middle age) and partly because older children and teenagers were perfectly capable of handling most of the work required to keep an agricultural or pre-industrial society going.

Jewish law in the time of Christ, and in fact to this day, recognizes boys as adults at age 12 or 13 (bar mitzvah). That is when they become bound by all the religious obligations of an adult and can be counted as part of a minyan -- the "quorum" of 10 adult men required to hold a synagogue service or any kind of public prayer.

Likewise girls are recognized as adults at around the same age, although in Orthodox Judaism, they do not have the same religious obligations as men, so the "bat mitzvah" ceremony for girls is performed mainly in Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations.

A girl of 12 to 15 years of age in Mary's time would not have been regarded as a child, but as an adult or very close to being an adult. As a previous poster said, puberty in girls might have occurred later than it does today (age 14-15 instead of 11-12) due to diet and other conditions, but most girls would have been considered ready to marry shortly after puberty.
