Smile The Beatitudes Song

Since everyone is so great at remembering old songs from the 70's & 80's... here's another one I'm trying to find the words for. It is a song about the Beatitudes and the tune was kind of fast and we usually had a person playing the guitar while we were singing it.

I can't remember all of the words, but here are a few (the verse below may not be in order)...

VERSE
Blest are you, the poor who trust the Father with your lives,
for within your heart is born, the Kingdom of the Lord.
Blest are you who thirst for truth and know your Father wise,
for within your heart is born, the Kingdom of the Lord.

CHORUS
Let your light, shine, for all the world to see.
Men will see the things you do, and give your Father praise.

I've done many searches on the internet for the full lyrics and can not come up with anything. Thank you for any help you can give.

Happy Mom Lisa, I think you are thinking of ...Bless us O Lord, make us poor in spirit, bless us oh lord our god. You are the light of the world,may you light shine before all, that they may see the good that you do and give glory to God.

I haven't heard that in ages and it was one of my favs.

JanetF, that is one of my favorites too. That one however is called "We are the light of the world"

Quote:
We Are The Light Of The World.

Blessed are they who are poor in spirt,
theirs is the kingdom of God.
Bless us, O Lord, make us poor in spirit;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

Refrain: We are the light of the world;
may our light shine before all,
that they may see the good that we do,
and give glory to God.

2. Blessed are they who are meek and humble;
they will inherit the earth.
Bless us, O Lord, make us meek and humble;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

3. Blessed are they who will mourn in sorrow;
they will be comforted.
Bless us, O Lord, when we share their sorrow;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

4. Bless those who hunger and thirst for justice;
they will be satisfied.
Bless us, O Lord, hear our cry for justice;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

5. Blessed are they who show others mercy;
they will know mercy too.
Bless us, O Lord, hear our cry for mercy;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

6. Blessed are hearts that are clean and holy;
they will behold the Lord.
Bless us, O Lord, make us pure and holy;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

7. Blessed are they who bring peace among us;
they are the children of God.
Bless us, O Lord, may your peace be with us;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

8. Bless those who suffer from persecution;
theirs is the kingdom of God.
Bless us, O Lord, when they persecute us;
bless us, O Lord, our God.

With all due respect to the OP, the 1970s and early 1980s were the absolute worst years for music as far as the Church is concerned. A lot of the songs were just horrible and sounded either too folksy or too much like a Donny and Marie song. One song, in particular, They'll Know We are Christians, sounds like it could very well fit into Fleetwood Mac's Tusk.

Why not teach the younger crowd real songs with rich content in them rather than the tripe that we were subjected to when we were kids. Furthermore, "We are the Light of the World" is directed too much at what we are doing. It's centered around us, rather than on God.

Hi Janet,
I love that song too. Thank you for responding. The other Beatitude song was the one for which I was searching, but I am so thankful that I rec'd so many responses. There are so many hymns that I love and sometimes bring me to tears, like Hosea, and On Eagles Wings, The Supper of the Lord, I could go on and and on.
Thank you again,
Lisa

Thank you for your response Benedictgal - I guess I'm just a Donny and Marie type of person. I just remember feeling so full of God's love when I heard and learned those songs. I'm open for suggestions - what song/hymns would you suggest? Please remember that these children are only ages 3 - 5. Thank you again and I look forward to hearing back,
Lisa

Hello.. I'm new here, but I want to tell you all those songs you're looking for you can find in "Glory & Praise I" and "Glory & Praise II". I used to have them because I was a church guitarist and vocalist in church back in the 80's as a teenager. Wish I had those books now. Lost them when I moved out of my parents' house.

I can give you some of the list I remember if there are other songs you're looking for. I still play some of them from memory- but it's sketchy, at best.

On Eagle's Wings, Be Not Afraid, Here I am Lord, Jesus (sung in 3 verses and 3 or 4 part harmony), Every Valley, and the list goes on...

Man, I wish I could get that book. Might have to make some calls...

As a suggestion looking for good hymns for children, Anglican hymn books often have some - especially the older ones. We have a longer tradition of English hymns than Catholics, which gives us a bt of an advantage. Most if not all would be suitable for Catholics.

We have been teaching our toddler class the hymn "God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall". It is a lovely song for small children, and they don't seem to have any trouble learning it. We had the first verse and chorus after singing it at three Sunday School classes, and another two weeks for verse two. These are two to four year olds.

God sees the little sparrow fall,
It meets His tender view;
If God so loves the little birds,
I know He loves me, too.

Refrain

He loves me, too, He loves me, too,
I know He loves me, too;
Because He loves the little things,
I know He loves me, too.

He paints the lily of the field,
Perfumes each lily bell;
If He so loves the little flow’rs,
I know He loves me well.

Refrain

God made the little birds and flow’rs,
And all things large and small;
He’ll not forget his little ones,
I know He loves them all.

Refrain

I've also been teaching my girls "In the Bleak Midwinter" for Christmas, which they seem to be picking up well. Here is a beautiful choir version - a bit more than most can aspire to but very lovely.

Other favorites in my church for kids are "All THings Bright and Beautiful" or THis is My Father's World" - though you may not want all the verses - some I don't like.
