There is a saying, "If one goes in as pope...he comes out a cardinal"...

Actually, research on past papal elections demonstrate that the one elected is usually one of the front runners.

It ends by saying that John XXIII was elected pope at the same age as Cardinal Ratzinger. Enough said.
But it was nice to see the bishop who confirmed me, now in the diocese of Sao Paulo in Brazil, as papabile. Maybe having acquaintances in high place might get me in Heaven, yes?

Really? I thought it was the contrary. I was really young when popes John Paul I and II were elected, but AFAIR neither was a front runner, were they?

in modern times, the only front runner I can recall historically was Pius XII - it was a given that he was going to get it. Outside of that they were all "suprises" some little, some big.

Re: The Man Who Would Be Pope -Speculation
I would hope the papacy will go to Arinze or Ratzinger. Those would be my two favorites, but I'm sure whoever is elected I will love just the same. That said, I hope it's not something we have to think about for a while. I'm sure we'll all continue to pray for the health of JP2.

Thanks Augustine. Then the Archbishop of Sao Paulo, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, would be your Bishop. Wouldn't that be nice for you.
I saw Cardinal Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras on EWTN awhile back and found himto be quite interesting.... Then there is Jean Marie Lustiger(sp)...another interesting prospect since he might fulfill the prophecy of St. Malachy about the next pope being Jewish? God Bless, Annunciata

That is not what Malachy said in the prophecies: the Glory of the Olive has numerous applications to current life, ONE of which is the possibility of Jewish antecedents.

Keep this in mind. Who expected a Pole to be elected last time?

Re: The Man Who Would Be Pope -Speculation
Yep, there is an Australian Cardinal who might make a good Pope.
