I don't know if it is possible for me to have a favorite hymn. Tantum Ergo and Salve Regina bring back good memories and feelings from my Catholic elementary school days. I will say that Kumbaya is definitely my LEAST favorite.

"The Strife is O'er"
"Be Still, My Soul"

I really can't choose between those two. They're both incredible! Although I actually don't know if Be Still My Soul is a Catholic hymn...I know the text was written in Germany.

I forgot “Amazing Grace” but then again I think most Christians love this song, not just Catholics. I think a “Protestant” wrote it, I’m not sure… I still love it, sung or played on bagpipes.

Who wrote “Amazing Grace”?

In addition, is, or can “Danny boy” be considered a Christian or Catholic Hymn? I’m Irish; don’t let the name fool you it is from a stepfather…

Hi,

I would have to say the Te Deum (Holy God we praise thy name)

but then there's How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace and so forth.

1-O Lord I am not Worthy,
Alleluia Sing to Jesus
Come Holy Ghost
Salve Regina
Immaculate Mary
Jesus My Lord, My God, My All
ETC...
I don't like half the songs posted on here , but I do like the other half
It is interesting to see people's different tastes.

I think the title of one of my favorites is Lift High the Cross. I like the melody and the words. When I sing "Each newborn soldier of the Crucified, bears on his brow the mark of Him who died..." I tear up because I think of all our RCIA candidates who are anointed by our pastor with a REAL BIG cross in oil at the Easter Vigil.

And singing Veni Creator or Veni Sancte Spiritus is a tremendous experience.
There's a Polish Christmas carol in the Catholic Book of Worship, called "In Night's Deep Silence" ("Wsród nocnej ciszy" -- is this correct?) I'd seriously love to hear it, but I can't find an mp3 or wav of it online.

I find a lot of the non-English carols to be beautiful. I remember the first time I heard "Gabriel's Message", the Basque carol.

Adoramus Te, and Ave Maria. Beautiful, both of them. My parents loved How Great Thou Art.

  • Sons of God ...
    Quote:
R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

1- Brothers, sister we are one,
And our life has just begun,
In the spirit we are young,
    We can live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

2- Shout together to the Lord
    Who has promised our reward,
    Happiness a hundred fold
    And we'll live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

3- Jesus gave a new command:
That we love our fellow man,
Till we reach the promised land
    Where we'll live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

4- If we want to live with Him,
We must also die with Him,
    Die to selfishness and sin
    And we'll live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

5- Make the world a unity,
    Make all men one family,
    Till we meet The Trinity
    And we'll live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.

6- With the church we celebrate,
    Jesus coming we await,
    So we'll make a holiday,
    So we'll live forever.

R- Sons of God: Hear His Holy word,
Gather around the table of the Lord
Eat His Body, drink His Blood
And we'll sing a song of love
    Allelu, allelu, allelu, alleluia.
  • Let us break bread together ...

Let us break bread together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us break bread together on our knees. (on our knees)
Let us fall on our knees with our face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us drink wine together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us drink wine together on our knees. (on our knees)
Let us fall on our knees with our face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us praise God together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us praise God together on our knees. (on our knees)
Let us fall on our knees with our face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

"Amazing Grace" was written by John Newton, who was an Anglican clergyman.

So many but a few are:

Ave Maria - My dad sang it every Christmas going to see Monseingnor McAdams

Tantum Ergo - I love the latin hymns

O Holy Night

There are just so many that bring back memories of childhood.

what does Cor ad cor Loquitur mean? Does it mean some sort of phrase speaks for itself? I know res ipsa loquitar means the thing speaks for itself so I was wondering if your phrase has anything to do with that. Random comment but I'm just curious.
