Default Are we supposed to fast every Friday during Lent?

I know that you must fast Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and you must abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. However, someone recently told me that you must fast every Friday during Lent, or at least eliminate snacking. Is this true?

Shaun

Fasting would be eating one large meal and two smaller meals on Fridays of Lent. Snacking is forbidden.

That's not the case. Fridays are days of abstinence, not days of fasting. Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the days of fasting. Of course, you can choose to fast every Friday in Lent as an individual devotion.

Thanks for correcting me. I thought something might have been wrong...

And this past Friday, there was no abstinence required.

Some also choose to fast all through Lent, with the possible exception of the Solemnity of St. Joseph. You could have also eaten meat yesterday. Our priest encouraged us to eliminate between meal snacking all through Lent. (I give it my best shot and hope I can continue that good habit even after Lent! Water instead when I get the snacking urge!)

No.

Fasting is only required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Of course, if you want to fast on more days then that, it certainly is OK. I have permission from my Physician (very important) and my Spiritual Director to fast all 40 days of Lent.

Now if you mean abstinance, no meat, then, yes, abstinance on all Fridays of Lent.

Except today, which was the Solemnity Of St. Joseph. No fasting or abstinance required
