Default 1am ray of hope for Terri -- US House to Issue Subpoenas

Praised be Jesus Christ, a ray of hope has appeared after midnight tonight, early Friday morning.

Thank God there were legislators who came up with this idea!

The United States House of Reps. "House Government Reform Committee" is planning to issue subpoenas for the hospice administrators and doctors, in an effort to "to allow Congress to fully understand the procedures and practices that are currently keeping her alive." It seems there will be a concurrent US Senate investigation as well.

"We've been going nonstop on this all day long," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Republican from Tennessee, said before the House announcement, which came after midnight. "Letters are being written and sent out. We're not giving up and we're not going to give up."

It was not immediately known what effect the subpoenas will have on Friday, when the court order to remove the feeding tube takes effect. "We feel that we're on comfortable ground given the federal government's interest in long-term care," Hastert spokesman Ron Bonjean said Friday morning.

Earlier, David Gibbs, attorney for Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, said that he would ask a federal judge in a habeas corpus filing Friday in Tampa to block the removal and review the actions of state courts. Such appeals are most commonly used in death penalty cases when legal appeals have been exhausted; they require the government to justify its actions.

"We are going to ask him to issue a stay because in this case, state action would be used to end the life of an innocent, disabled woman," Gibbs said.

The Florida attorney general's office usually defends the state against habeas filings. A call to the office late Thursday seeking comment was not immediately returned.

I hope this works.

Of course this could have the effect of sending Michael Schiavo over the edge.

This is good news but I am disappointed and troubled that US legislators seem to be more concerned about having a "spring break" than saving the life of a woman. If the spring break is preventing them from passing this critical legislation, why not just postpone the spring break? Is having a spring break more important than saving this woman's life?

This morning I awoke to a national news broadcast describing this as a "last ditch effort to circumvent American civil law." Later, a local news report called Terri's situation a "right to die" case, and a news reporter commented, "at least her brave husband, Michael's, torment can now cease."

I am beginning to seriously question if the American system itself, which is based upon militant individualism, relativism, hedonism and minimalism, should be discarded. In the late 18th Century, persons stood up to political oppression and injustice using guerilla war tactics and there was literal bloodshed on both sides. We have seen the effect such efforts have had on the nation with 9-11, Oklahoma City, and the DC sniper. Such tactics do not seem to be a credible option in the modern world, and would only harm the noble cause of completely reforming America and other Western Democracies.

There is also the political option. However, since the entire system appears to be corrupted, this method would be as ineffective as running a spyware program on a computer system whose hard drive had already been reconfigured to crash.

Another option remains, which few have been brave enough to try. This option is the spiritual option. The option to pray and to fast relentlessly for the conversion of sinners. This option requires the greatest effort and sacrifice. It demands that our lives are brought into complete submission to the will of God, and that this is outwardly expressed in the manner by which we conduct ourselves in all things. We must be, as the great Saints of our tradition, people of impeccable integrity. It is a path that is difficult to navigate...a road less travelled. Even so, we are compelled as followers of Christ, as committed Catholic Christians, to follow it.

God used the lives of peasants to proclaim the Good News throughout the world. Today, he is calling you and I to holistically live it with every fiber of our being. We have the Sacraments available to us for strength on the journey. We have God's Word hidden in our hearts to illumine our path.

Through Terri's struggle may we be inspired to hope for a brighter future. May the injustices done to her and to others inspire us to "set our faces like flint" as we sincerely resolve to follow and obey the Master.

You might want to seriously consider changing the channel that you listen to. That is horrible!

That shows how stong of an influence the culture of death has on the mainstream media. Catholic Radio is where I tune in for news about Terri for the pro-life point of view.

We do have a serious problem of a secular liberalism mentality that is a "given" in our law system and our schools.

As a result, both the schools and the judicial system need to be fixed or we will see our country continue to disintegrate.

We need to pursue all options, staring with prayer and fasting, but taking actions and imploring other Christians to act. We cannot compartmentalize the faith - praising God on Sunday, and then taking a materialistic worldview throughoutt the rest of the week that ignores God as a reality.

We have seen some counter-movement against secular liberalism - it (expectedly) has slowed following the election. It needs to pick back up. Satan and his cronies will not rest. The good seekers of Truth need to understand that they cannot rest either. We are in this fight for the long haul - whatever it takes. We have Truth on our side and we will prevail but evil will persist if good people do nothing.

This is common. My local news ran 2 interviews of people on the street that supported Terri's starvation and then followed it with a story about the starvation of a greyhound being the greatest form of cruelty imaginable.
