Default How do I discipline a 10-year-old with ADHD?

I am in desperate need of help with disciplining my 10-year-old. He was diagnosed with ADHD about two years ago. I put him on medications because the doctor were saying this was the only thing that would help him. I had him on it for a year and he started having some serious side effects that I didn't care for, so I took him off of it. He has been off of it all of this school year. He was doing okay in the middle of the school year and now that school is about over with, he is constantly getting in trouble at school just about every day at least once or twice a week.

He is lying to us. He won't keep his hands to himself and wants to talk when he is not supposed to. He is almost done with school and I gave him a deal that if he will be good the last couple of weeks we are going to do lots of fun things this summer. I told him this a couple of days ago and he got in trouble again and then I had to constantly ask him tonight because I could see that he was lying about getting in trouble today and he finally told me. I don't know what to do. I have done everything from taking things away from him to given him things to look forward to. I have spanked him for lying. I was also told to use the soap for the lying. I don't know if I agree with the soap. I have also had him write sentences for the bad behavior.

We are Catholic and I wouldn't say that I have been a very good Catholic these past few months. I know this is one of the problems right here. I just became Catholic about a year ago and my son just became Catholic at this last Easter Vigil. I plan to go to Mass this weekend and I plan to have my son go to reconciliation as well and me too. I just need some more advice in what to do. Another thing is that can you pray for us that we make it to Mass this weekend and that we will be going to Mass every weekend from now on. It has been so hard with me as I am going to school, school has become first and that is not how I want to be. I really love the Lord and I know he loves us too.

At the risk of sounding unhelpful, this is really not an apologetics question. This is a medical and psychological question, and should be discussed with your son's doctor and with a counselor who specializes in helping children with ADHD. You may want to call the Pastoral Solutions Insitute, a Catholic counseling apostolate, for counseling or for a referral to a specialist in your area.

In the meantime, since it sounds like your current disciplinary methods are not working and you are in need of immediate short-term solutions while making arrangements for further counseling, you might want to see if there is a Parents Anonymous support group in your area.
