How has this changed you?
I think the Terri Schiavo case is going to affect this generation in a profound way, similar to the 1960's, Vietnam and Watergate. Anyone who has managed to grow up with any trust in government, any kind of media, or even some in the Church, will have that swept away.
We have a mainstream media who is painting the Schiavo as a "vegetable", a lawyer who hears voices telling him that patients otherwise silent "want to die", a Jesuit priest who is saying that Schiavo shouldn't be kept alive, a famous nun who defends those on death row but won't defend Schiavo and many pastors who are publically silent on the issue. Our government is being taken hostage by pro-Death politicians and tyranical judges who are taking away any mention of religion or even of U.S. Law in the making of their decisions.
I appologize if I sound angry or disrespectful. This case has opened my eyes a lot. For quite a while I have had a "Kill your TV" bumper sticker on my bulletin board at home, but I'm not sure my behavior had changed much. I haven't watched tv in a week. I just can't stand to turn the thing on anymore.
I have a 16 year old who now has to go through the same thing many in my generation had to go through--totally mistrusting everything he was taught to beleive in. His father is in the military part time and may go overseas for a few months. What would have made us proud a few years ago, now scares us to death.
How will this change me? I beleive more and more in Satan's influence in the world now. I beleive that Jesus and the Church have the way to eternal life. I just don't think many people or institutions are following Him.

Re: How has this changed you?
I've noticed a couple things. Everyone's very conscious of Living Wills now, and I have one on my desk right now. I keep wondering, what if it gave NO directions, no DNR? No, it seems the only reason people execute these docs is for the DNR part. Why? "Everyone" seems to think they couldn't live that way. Okay...but it's hard to check the DNR box. I finally did, but it was because it hit me that we are all going to be at the mercy of someone else, and I'm not sure I trust anyone. I won't have parents like Terri's, that's for sure. No one will care.
So at least I make the choice myself: pull the plug, it's *my* decision (but not really). What a depressing state of affairs. We're all in this mass suicide mode it seems, or at least those of us contemplating a living will. I don't think it's right, I don't think there should be this expectation that we will all have DNRs as advance directives, yet that's what seems to be happening since the world got on this End of Life movement. I guess it's because of the state of medicine now, and it makes me miss the old simple days of declining health and sudden death...not that that was great either.

The living will issue bothers me too. What if someone had a living will WITHOUT a DNR? Could we say, keep me alive? I don't know. What actually *is* brain death? Is Terri medically "brain dead"? If so, how could a brain dead person react to her parents' presence? Its all so confusing. If you do check the DNR box, what exactly does that mean to you and to your future caregivers?

Re: How has this changed you?
It is just a continuation of the culture of death that I have witnessed for years. I see it as a pivotal point though in the Culture of Death advancements.
As I have experienced disbailties myself, and in many friends and family members over the years, I am well aware of the mindset..."They would be better off dead CROWD!"
Most Americans in general who think it is OK have never been personally through it. The ones who have zero credibilty are the ones pushing it.
