Favorite John Paul II quotes
This thread is dedicated to your favorite quotes from John Paul II. They can be from his encyclicals, addresses, his books and so forth. Please reference the source and the date if you post.
“The Church wishes to serve this single end: that each person may be able to find Christ, in order that Christ may walk with each person the path of life, with the power of the truth about man and the world that is contained in the mystery of the Incarnation and the Redemption and with the power of the love that is radiated by that truth.”
-John Paul II, Redemptor Hominis, No. 13, March 4, 1979.

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
I don't have the source for this at my fingertips... but I got it out of the intro to Jason Evert's book... ) I believe it's from one of JPII's WYD addresses...
"It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; he is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; he is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is he who provokes you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is he who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is he who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be ground down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal."
JP II, we love you!

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
“The splendour of truth shines forth in all the works of the Creator and, in a special way, in man, created in the image and likeness of God (cf. Genesis 1:26). Truth enlightens man's intelligence and shapes his freedom, leading him to know and love the Lord. Hence the Psalmist prays: 'Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord' (Psalm 4:6).”
- John Paul II, Veritaits Splendor, August 6, 1993.

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
Here's some quotes I've collected from the Holy Father through the years about encountering our Risen Lord. I've put a number of them together to preach a sermon.
"The most beautiful and stirring adventure that can happen to you is the personal meeting with Jesus, who is the only one who gives real meaning to our lives."
"Only in the encounter with him, the Word made flesh, do we find the fullness of self and happiness. Religion itself, without the experience of wondrous discovery of the Son of God and communion with him, who became our brother, becomes a mere set of principles that are increasingly difficult to understand, and rules that are increasingly hard to accept."
"Christianity is not an ideology; it is a personal encounter with the Risen Christ. The most consoling effect of this encounter is precisely, the certaintly that, this everlasting and overwhelming love with which God loves us means he will never abandon us."
"While we may have assented intellectually to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we may not have sufficient personal experience of his power in our lives to give us the boldness and assurance to procalim him as Lord and Savior to our society and our world."
"In his [Pope's] first major message to the America's as a whole, a 135 page exhortation, 'Ecclesia in America,' he acknowleges that many of the hemisphere's 500 million Catholics are only nominally Catholic, but called on them to engage in intense prayer, and to seek a personal encounter with Christ."
"Evangelization requires us to have a personal encounter with the Lord, a personal relationship with Jesus."
"The burning desire to invite others to encounter the One we have encountered, is the start of the evangelizing mission to which the whole Church is called."
"Neither theological knowledge nor social action alone is enough to keep us in love with Christ unless both are preceded by a personal encounter with him."
"As followers of Jesus, we progress from hearing of Christ, to encountering him personally and experiencing conversion. Conversion leads to communion with those around us, then to solidarity with the human family. When that is integrated, we are compelled to proclaim Jesus to those who have not heard, to try to reach those who turned away."
"If it is genuine, the personal encounter with the Lord will also bring a renewal of the Church: as sisters and neighbors to each other, the particular Churches of the continent will strengthen the bonds of cooperation and solidarity in order that the saving work of Christ may continue in the history of America with ever greater effect. Open to the unity which comes from true communion with the Risen Lord, the particular Churches, and all who belong to them, will discover through their own spiritual experience that the enocunter with the living Jesus Christ is the path to conversion, communion, and solidarity. To the extent these goals are reached, there will emerge an ever increasing dedication to the new evangelization of America."
God bless all

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
"When you wonder about the mystery of yourself, look to Christ, who gives you the meaning of life. When you wonder what it means to be a mature person, look to Christ, who is the fulfillness of humanity. And when you wonder about your role in the future of the world look to Christ."
"Young people are threatened... by the evil use of advertising techniques that stimulate the natural inclination to avoid hard work by promising the immediate satisfaction of every desire."

I like that quote/title, but I believe his latest book is Memory and Identity. I bought it Friday; it was released in March, I believe.

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
In 1984, no less true 21 years later:
"The medical profession today is suffering fundamentally from an identity crisis: there is the grave danger that this profession, born and developed as a commitment of service to suffering man, can become deviated by ideologies and used to the detriment of human life. Where the medical profession is called upon to suppress conceived life; where it is used to eliminate the dying; where it allows itself to be led to intervene against the plan of the Creator in the life of the family or to be taken by the temptation to the manipulation of human life, and when it loses sight of its authentic direction of purpose toward the person who is most unfortunate and most sick, it loses its ethos, it becomes sick in its turn, it loses and obscures its own dignity and moral autonomy."

Re: Favorite John Paul II quotes
"I proclaim, with the conviction of my faith in Christ and with an awareness of my mission, that violence is evil, that violence is unacceptable as a solution to problems, that violence is unworthy of man…. Now I wish to speak to all men and women engaged in violence. I appeal to you, in the language of passionate pleading. On my knees I beg of you to turn away from the paths of violence and to return to the way of peace" (L’Osservatore Romano, October 1979).
"Today the scale and the horror of modern warfare—whether nuclear or not—makes it totally unacceptable as a means of settling differences between nations. War should belong to the tragic past, to history, it should find no place on humanity’s agenda for the future." Coventry Cathedral (bombed by the Nazi's) 1982
"Recent history clearly shows the failure of recourse to violence as a means for resolving political and social problems. War destroys, it does not build up; it weakens the moral foundations of society and creates further divisions and long-lasting tensions." (World Day of Peace, 1999)
History in fact shows that the recruitment of terrorists is more easily achieved in areas where human rights are trampled upon and where injustice is a part of daily life. This is not to say that the inequalities and abuses existing in the world excuse acts of terrorism: there can never of course be any justification for violence and disregard for human life. However, the international community can no longer overlook the underlying causes that lead young people especially to despair of humanity, of life itself and of the future, and to fall prey to the temptations of violence, hatred and a desire for revenge at any cost." (September 7, 2002)
"O Almighty and merciful God, you cannot be understood by one who sows discord, you cannot be accepted by one who loves violence: look upon our painful human condition tried by cruel acts of terror and death, comfort your children and open our hearts to hope, so that our time may again know days of serenity and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. (September 12, 2001)
