The Shoes of the Fisherman
Has anyone seen this movie? This is a great movie about a pope. It can be compared to JonhPaul II, especially at the end is a good summary of what his life was about.
If you havent GO RENT "THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN"!!

Re: The Shoes of the Fisherman
I saw it maybe a couple months ago.
Anthony Quinn was great. He really showed strength amidst the pomp and circumstance which could be overwhelming.
But I had 2 reservations (quibbles?):
I thought it had a rushed feel to it. Quinn has a minor dialogue with a small group of cardinals, and all of a sudden they start pledging fealty in the conclave. Something was missing.
And I thought the theology was a little mushy.
However, the insider look at the Vatican was neat.

We could have it play out. Patriarch Husar is papabile... an Eastern Catholic Pope would be interesting.

I don't remember this scene; it's been a long while since I've seen the movie. But it could be that they elected him pope through "acclamation." Incidentally John Paul II excluded this method of election.

Re: The Shoes of the Fisherman
I found the pope's solution to the world crisis to be secular. He sells all of the church's treasures. And so money becomes the solution to all the political problems. In contrast John Paul II participated in the fall of comunism through peaceful and religious means.

True, but there is no comparison to reality. I had the same thoughts as you, but just imagine how many people would have become Catholic as a result of such charity.

Which "charity" are you referring to? Selling the church's treasures?

I know what your getting at, I do think that there is stuff that should never be sold. But there are so many ways the Chruch could raise money, if that guy had the charisma that JP2 had the money would have been raised in a week all by donations. Like I said there is no real comparison to reality, there were parts I would have done differently. The point that the pope was trying to get across in the movie was that in Christ's one true Church a level of charity existed that was so foreign to the world that that leader couldnt believe what he was hearing.

Re: The Shoes of the Fisherman
I thought it was kind of prophetic. In the movie you have a Slavic pope don a three piece suit to meet with the head of a communist nation(China). In reality, our beloved, Slavic Pope, John Paul II met with the leader of a communist nation(Cuba), only the leader of that communist nation was the one to don the three piece suit.
