"Holy Roman Church" is not the same as "Roman Catholic Church."

Ignorance? Unwillingness to change to the correct term? Who knows?

Wow! That's an awfully broad brush charge to make. Can you offer us any substantiation to your accusation?

I remember being taught that it was to distinguish between the true Catholic Church and any others claiming to be Catholic. In other words a positive disctinction.

Also, consider where that Protestant term is used.

In Germany it's "die Katolische Kirche," in Poland, "Katolicki Kosciol," in Italy, "la Chiesa Cattolica," in Spain, "la iglesia catolica." No one on the Continent, or in South America, or elsewhere outside England, the U.S., and Canada, (to the best of my knowledge) adds "Roman."

So much for the need to use "Roman."

And who were some of these imposters that were of such moment that a "positive distinction" had to be made?

Nuns. I don't really blame them as they were trying to explain this to elementaty school kids.

Does the Catholic Church not include Churches who are not Roman? Eastern and so on?

I don't know about elsewhere but in Britain especially (and some parts of Mainland Europe) the Catholic Churches are nearly all RC Churches. I have not found more than about 5 Eastern Catholic Churches in the whole of England (by looking on the internet) and the term"RC" is meant to distinguish that it is "Roman" therefore belonging to the Papacy. I understand some people online find this offensive, but in England I have never heard anyone react badly to it. RC School, Church, Community College; this is how I have always known them. If there is a valid reason this is incorrect please advise me. I will contact the three dioceses in which I have lived and urge them to correct the mistake...

(BTW in France, Spain and Portugal when I have attended Mass there, they always called the Churches Roman Catholic to distinguish which Rite they belonged to)

Dear buffalo,

I am a Catholic who is not of the Roman Rite. As such, the term "Roman Catholic Church" does not at all apply to me, yet I am every bit as much a Catholic as you. JPII was my pope as much as he was yours; he was the pope for all Catholics -- not just those of the Roman Rite -- as will be his successor. The universality of his pontificate is misrepresented by perpetuating the use of the incorrect term "Roman Catholic Church" when referring to the flock which he shepherds.

There's no reference to Catholicism in the first term.

Excellent point! The Catholic Church is not exclusively for those of the Roman Rite.

I think your really misunderstanding what I mean... it's not an attack on those that don't utilize that nomenclature, it's that putting "Roman" out there really emphasizes the communion with Rome and I've found the pastors of these churches to be especially orthodox.
